    What Is a PC Card Slot:

    • Design - The PC Card itself, originally designed by the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) as the PCMCIA Card, became a standard in the information-technology industry for expanding computer storage. Its widespread acceptance led to the design of the PC Card slot
    • History - After the original PCMCIA Card (shortened to PC Card in 1999) was widely marketed and branded as the industry standard, internal installation of the cards was replaced by PC Card Slots, which were designed into the sides of virtually all portable laptop computers
    • Evolution - The potential offered by evolving PC Card technology led to several card design types; as a result, laptop design began incorporating two or more PC Card slots to accommodate the cards' varying thicknesses
    • Types and Uses - There are three types of PC Card Slots to accomodate three types of PC Cards: Type 1 is 3.3 mm thick and designed for PC cards that expand computer memory; Type 2 is 5.0 mm and designed for expanded functionality with peripheral computing devices (network adapters, LAN modems); Type 3 is 10.5 mm thick and designed for cards that support larger peripheral devices (external hard drives, mass storage devices)
    • Warning - It is not the technology of the card, but the thickness that matters when using a PC Card slot; thinner PC Cards can be supported by thicker PC Card slots, but the opposite is not true
    • Considerations - In 2003, the PCMCIA replaced the PC Card Standard with the new ExpressCard and, shortly thereafter, so too did most modern portable computer designs. As a thinner and lighter card, the ExpressCard slot does not support PC Cards
