    I-Ray Infrared Filter:

The I-Ray Infrared Filter captures more of "the invisible light beyond". Transmits over 90% of near-infrared light between 700 and 1100 nanometers while blocking virtually all visible and UV light. Ring-mounted to block any visible light from possibly fogging the image. Read the story below to learn how you can shoot infrared photos

Can you take infrared photos with your camera?

Here are the basic types of cameras that can be used with your I-Ray Filter to create dramatic infrared (IR) photographs:

    • A. Film cameras loaded with IR-sensitive film --The I-Ray delivers excellent results for cameras that use 35-mm, medium format, or even large format infrared-sensitive film. You will need to compose and frame your image before mounting the I-Ray on the lens. Then, simply screw the I-Ray filter onto the lens to prevent any visible light from reaching the film during exposures. Be sure to follow the film manufacturer's instructions carefully when loading, exposing and unloading the infrared-sensitive black-and-white film from your camera.
    • B. Digital cameras manufactured since 2002 --Almost all digital cameras ranging from compacts to professional digital SLRs manufactured since 2002 have a built-in "hot mirror" which blocks much of the IR light from reaching the sensor. This is done to improve the sensor's visible-light imaging performance.
    • C. Digital cameras "born" between 1999 and 2001 without an infrared-blocking filter --This includes some, but not all, digital compact cameras made in those years. These cameras are quite sensitive to infrared light. As soon as the I-Ray Filter is placed on the lens, these cameras can capture IR images just as though you were shooting visible light These older 2- or 3-megapixel compact cameras can be found on eBay (or perhaps in your local camera store's used inventory). The Olympus C-2020 and the Nikon Coolpix 950 are two good examples of such "IR ready" cameras.
    • D. Compact digital cameras that have been modified for infrared photography by removing the hot mirror --A number of different digital compact cameras can be modified by specialized services that replace the hot mirror with a clear glass filter.
    • This technique is especially successful for compact cameras with electronic viewfinders (EVF). With the I-Ray screwed onto the lens, the EVF reveals the infrared image on the LCD monitor for easy image composition. Most of these converted compact cameras are sensitive enough to be used without a tripod and will automatically focus and expose the infrared image.
    • E. Single lens reflex (SLR) digital cameras that have been converted for infrared photography by replacing the hot mirror with clear glass --Unlike the EVF displays on digital compacts (as described above), viewing by eye through the lens on an SLR is not possible when the I-Ray is mounted on the lens.
    • A tripod is almost essential with such cameras to permit framing the image prior to placing the I-Ray Filter on the lens to make the first exposure. After each shot, your ISO, shutter, and aperture settings can be adjusted and evaluated on the LCD display to help achieve the desired exposure. Compared to an unmodified DSLR, you'll be able to use faster shutter speeds and smaller lens openings because there is no hot mirror in front of the sensor.

    A NOTE OF CAUTION:

    • When using the I-Ray Filter with digital cameras made since 2002, it will be necessary to make relatively long exposures which will require the use of a tripod to hold the camera. The reduced IR sensitivity of these cameras will vary widely, so you will need to experiment with your shutter, aperture and ISO to determine the best settings for your specific camera in order to achieve the best possible exposures.

  • Other Thoughts: IR-blocking filter, but even with that filter in place, some cameras can be used for IR photography, given a suitably long exposure.

  • Other Thoughts: For the ametuer, this filter is good. To get a really true infrared picture, one would have to spend a lot of money on a higher-priced filter.
