How to String a Spinning Reel:

Stringing line is one of the most important things a fisherman has to do. Poorly strung line can cause tangles and even cause a fish to escape. Losing a fish is a huge deal in tournament fishing and can mean the difference between not only winning and losing but thousands of dollars. Thus correctly stringing a reel is of the utmost importance. Read on to learn how to string a spinning reel

• Remove any line already on the reel. Attach your reel to your rod so you have your set-up. Get a small bowl and fill it up halfway with water. Remove the new spool of line from its package. Poke a hole through the center of the reel and stick the pencil in the spool. Place the spool and pencil in the bowl
• Pull the end of the line out of the spool and poke it through the bottom eye on the rod. The reason for the water and pencil is so the line rolls off by itself and the water helps prevent tangles by helping to attach to the reel and not move around. Stick the line through the reel and wrap it around one time. Tie the end in a double knot. Then cut off the excess line, called the tag line. Tighten up your drag
• Hold the line between your thumb and pointer finger. Apply a bit of pressure as you slowly reel in the line. The drag and pressure you apply will ensure the line stays in perfect form, doesn't tangle and doesn't twist. Reel the line in slowly, watching the line as you reel. Take your time as this will prevent a bird's nest from forming and destroying your brand new line
• Reel the line all the way up until the spool is empty or the reel is full, whichever occurs first. Cut off the end of the line and pull the line through the eyes on the rod. Let out the line another foot or more and tie on your lure, hooks and other tackle
