How to Fix an LED Flashlight:

LED flashlights tend to last longer and burn brighter than traditional incandescent flashlights. The tradeoff, however, is that an LED flashlight can prove more difficult to fix. People used to old-fashioned flashlights in particular might have trouble diagnosing issues with an LED flashlight because the same root problems manifest themselves differently. Fixing basic LED flashlight issues can be done through these simple steps
Instructions
- Replace the batteries. While this is an obvious step with traditional flashlights, which dim as the batteries fade, you might not think to do so with an LED flashlight. The light in an LED flashlight never fades. It keeps burning until it disappears
- Clean the contact plate. Remove the batteries and look for the small metal circle(s) where the battery or batteries touch the flashlight. Running a pencil eraser over the contact plate will remove rust and grime and lead to a clean power connection
- Pry out the tail cap contacts and contact screw. These are the springs on the other end of the battery from the contact plate. Sometimes the spring can get jammed or the small metal contacts on each side of the spring can get snagged. Wiggling a small screwdriver between the springs and metal contacts will free them up and restore enough pressure to draw battery power
- Take the LED flashlight into a hardware store if you need a new bulb. Unlike incandescent flashlights, LED flashlight bulbs can only be replaced by professionals
How to Compare the Output of LED Flashlights:

The output of light emitting diode (LED) flashlights can be measured in several different ways. Similar to how different camera lenses are appropriate for taking different style pictures, certain flashlight designs are more appropriate for certain tasks than others. This is due to the way they are constructed, and is important to keep in mind when comparing the output of LED flashlights. Some flashlights have a narrow, yet bright beam. These flashlights will have higher "lux," which is the technical term for measuring light output spread over a specific area. Flashlights with high lux are useful for lighting things up from a distance, but may be less useful up close due to the narrow beam. Other flashlights will have wider, more diffuse beam. These flashlights have lower lux, but it is possible for them to have more "lumens," which is the technical term for sheer light output. The "hotspot" of these flashlights may not appear as bright as that of a light with high lux, but it may light up the entire room better. When comparing the output of LED flashlights, consider whether higher lux or higher lumens is most important for your task
Testing for Lux
- Set the flashlights that you wish to compare on a table that is positioned roughly 5 feet away from an empty wall. Leave 2 feet of space between them to ensure their beam profiles will not mix during the test. Ensure they are equidistant from the wall
- Turn the flashlights on, and set them to the maximum brightness setting if they are multiple mode lights
- Compare the brightest point of each flashlight beam. Since the lights are both equidistant from the wall, the flashlight with the brightest hotspot in the beam has the most lux. This flashlight will "throw" the beam of light farther, and will better light up objects at long range
Testing for Lumens
- Set the flashlights you wish to compare on a table in the center of a completely darkened room. It is critical that no external light pollute the testing environment. Stand them on their ends, with the lens facing the ceiling
- Turn one light on at the maximum setting. The light will bounce up the ceiling, diffusely illuminating the room
- Switch the first light off as you simultaneously turn the second flashlight on. Compare the output. The light that illuminates the room the brightest has the higher overall lumens, and puts out the most raw light without regard to beam shape

02-20-2012- Other Thoughts: I got this bright led flashlight for a friend to keep in her glove box since her block is poorly lit and she always comes home late. As far as I know, she's liked it. I got to play with it for a while and now I'll be ordering a second.
