How to Make Ceramic Flowers
- Ceramic flower creations are beautiful and long lasting. They add charm and character to any table or wall shelf. Making ceramic flowers starts with a plaster mold and clay. Follow a few steps, obtain access to a local kiln, and soon you'll be displaying your own ceramic flower masterpieces
- Instructions
- Obtain a plaster production mold, or a ceramic mold, of a flower. This mold is usually made from a hard plaster cement. The mold comes in 2 parts that connect together, with an opening at the top. If you put the 2 parts of the mold together, and look into the opening, you will see the form of the flower you wish to create
- Secure the mold with tight fitting straps or elastic bands. Pour your clay into the opening at the top of your flower mold, until it is filled. After about 20 minutes, when the clay starts to form a flower on the inside, check the level of the clay in the mold. You might need to add more clay periodically, as the clay settles
- Use a timer to determine the proper thickness of the clay inside the mold; usually about 60 minutes. When it is time, turn the mold upside down, so the clay can drain. The plaster mold will also draw moisture from the clay
- Let the plaster mold sit upside down for about 60 minutes. As the moisture is released from the clay, the clay flower will pull away from the sides of the plaster mold. When this occurs, it is time to remove the clay
- Release the straps from the flower mold to remove the ceramic flower on the inside. Gently pull the wet clay from the mold. Let the ceramic flower dry before cleaning the lines and wet sponging the surface
- Fire your flower in a kiln, at 2000 degrees. Apply a glaze, and fire it again.
- Tips & Warnings
- After your ceramic flower is glazed and fired, enhance it by adding ceramic decals for decoration. You can also apply mother of pearl or 22k gold
- Be careful when removing your ceramic flower from the plaster mold. The clay will be wet, soft and tender. Remove it carefully so it does not break, tear or distort
