How to Line a Bedspread:
If your spread is lightweight, it can be lined to give it some body. You've found the perfect bedspread for your room--one that complements the colors already in the room and that provides just the right feel and look to your decor. There's just one problem. The spread is so lightweight that it continually slips and falls off the bed. You can easily solve this problem by adding some weight and texture to the spread in the form of a lining.
- Instructions
- Use a flat sheet or fabric in a complementary color to the bedspread. Measure the spread and cut the fabric to size, adding 1/2-inch seam allowance on all four sides. If using 45-inch wide fabric, place the full-width panel in the center and sew half panels on either side.
- Pin the right sides of the bedspread and the lining fabric together. If using cording, position it at the seam line between the two layers of fabric and pin.
- Sew three sides together and turn the bedspread right side out.
- Using your hand or a ruler, straighten out the spread from between the two layers, pulling the corners out so they lie flat and smooth.
- Close off the last side by sewing by hand, using an overhand stitch to sew the two sides together. Make your stitches small and pick up only a few threads at a time from each side, to keep the stitches as invisible as possible.
How to Measure a Bedspread:
Whether you plan to sew or purchase a new bedspread, the success of your new look depends on correct measuring. Recent fashions in mattress design have made changes in bedding standards, and one can no longer assume that every bedspread fits every bed. Measured dimensions need to include length, width and height of your mattress, as well as the distance from the top of the mattress to the floor. The style of your bed will also influence your choice of bedspread.
- Instructions
- Measure the basic dimensions of your bed. This means the length and width of your mattress, plus the distance from the top of the mattress to the floor. Especially with a large bed, a helper to hold one end of the measuring tape can make your work quicker. Write down your measurements; once in the store, it's easy to forget them.
- Decide on how much coverage you want from your bedspread. For some, full-length is the only way to go. Be sure to include the drop from mattress top to the floor on all three sides of your bed if you want full-length coverage. Add extra length (3 to 6 inches) if you plan to tuck bed pillows under your spread.
- Allow for a foot board or bedposts in your calculations. You may want your spread full length on the sides and short enough to tuck in at the bottom, or you may want a spread that is slit on the corners to accommodate posts.
- Factor in alterations if the bedspread you absolutely must have does not quite fit your bed. A beautiful, too-long bargain may be worth the cost of hemming. A slightly short spread may merit purchase of a bed skirt to complete a to-the-floor look. Be flexible about alternatives and consider the overall look of the spread if you need to make adjustments.

04-09-2011- Other Thoughts: Finally, this is exactly what I wanted. I have a over sized queen bed and order the king size so it would go to the floor and I had room to tuck the pillows in at the top. I have been looking for over two years for a bedspread that would fit just right and after several unsatisfactory buys this one is perfect. It is 100% cotton. It looks nice, feels nice and washed up very well. I am very happy with my order and compared to others I have bought the price was good. I am thinking about ordering another so I have a spare one for my bed.

05-14-2011- Other Thoughts: Beautiful, well made, and warm! We were so tired of those little quilts that barely fit on a bed. But this one is long enough that we're not fighting over covers at night! Very well made. Stitches are holding up securely to kids and small dog. Colors are beautiful, vibrant and just perfect with my decor. I would definitely purchase again!
