Crafts for Garden Stakes:
- Creativity can mean a lot when it comes to sprucing up your landscape. If you are not adept at planting and organizing your garden, consider a craft-related option such as garden stakes to help make the plants around your house stand out. Decorative garden stakes add a burst of color or humor to the your landscape.
- Funny Messages
- You and your children can work together crafting garden stakes with funny messages. This project requires pieces of wood that can be fashioned into a stake: one thin piece to be hammered in and one rectangular piece for the message. The stake can be painted and decorated in any way-- glitter, sequins and buttons are a few ideas. The crux of the stake is the funny message you put on it using a black marker or a stencil and paint. An example of a humorous message: "Vegetables in training."
- Fake Plant Pot
- When plants are only starting to grow, your garden may look a little bare. Spruce it up with a colorful fake plant pot on a garden stake.
- This project requires a small clay pot with a hole, a dowel that fits in the hole, seed packets, an artificial vegetable and a glue and water mixture. Affix a seed packet to the clay pot with the glue and water mixture. Place some leaves in the pot and top it with an artificial vegetable matching the picture on the packet. Stick the dowel in the bottom of the pot and stake it into the ground. Decorate with ribbons or stickers.
- Flowers, Fruits and Animals
- This project requires pattern printouts such as the ones found at CraftTown.com. Flowers, fruit and animal patterns are available, but any pattern that can be traced onto wood will work. The project requires 1/2-inch wood for the main design, dowels for the stake, sandpaper, paint, varnish, bows and glue.
- Trace the pattern onto the wood; cut, sand and paint. When the paint is dry, glue the pieces together and varnish. Add decorative touches, then stake it in the ground.
- Embossed Metal
- If you have experience with embossing metal, consider crafting an embossed metal butterfly stake. Use the template at FamilyCorner.com or your own butterfly drawing. Trace the pattern onto card stock, then onto the copper sheet with a stylus. Use the eraser end of a pencil to give texture to the copper sheet. Make perforations, as desired, with a needle tool.
- Warm the copper with a heat gun on a metal baking sheet to deepen the copper's color. Use copper wire for the antennae and to stake the butterfly in the ground.
