How Does a Hot Glue Gun Work?
Who Uses Hot Glue Guns?
- Hot glue guns have a wealth of uses, from industrial to home settings. Hot glue can be used in the production of items that have layers that need to be joined together, such as corrugated cardboard. It can also seal boxes and cartons during the packaging process. In the home or art studio, hot glue guns are used to assemble crafts, such as decorative wreaths and dollhouses.
What's in the Glue?
- Hot melt adhesives contain a wide range of elements, including ethylene-vinyl acetate, wax, resin and any assortment of polyamides, polyethylenes, polyester or polypropolenes. The adhesive is shaped into cylindrical sticks, in an assortment of lengths and circumferences for different types of guns.
How the Glue Gun Works
- The glue gun works by heating the glue stick until it melts. The liquified glue is then fed through the dispenser by using the trigger or manually, by pushing the unmelted portion of the glue stick down into the melting chamber, then out through the pointed nozzle. When using glue guns, a tray, aluminum foil or scrap cardboard is needed to set the gun down when not in use. The melted adhesive will drip from the nozzle, especially when the gun is resting for more than a few seconds. Once the gun is unplugged or turned off, the adhesive re-hardens within the melting chamber until the next use.
How to Use Hot Melt Glue?
Hot melt glue is useful for binding a variety of craft materials including wood, metal, plastic, ribbons and fabric. If you enjoy putting crafts together, a hot glue gun should be a staple item in your craft box. Use hot glue for embellishing and constructing Christmas stockings, decorative wreaths, ornaments, jewelry boxes, silk floral swags, refrigerator magnets and countless other craft projects. Whether you use a miniature or full size hot glue gun, you will want to use it properly and efficiently.
Instructions
Prepare the Glue Gun- Check to make sure your glue gun is designed for hot melt glue sticks. For best results, do not use hot melt glue sticks in low-temp glue guns or low-temp glue sticks in hot melt glue guns.
- Place glue gun in a glue gun stand (if available). Place glue gun on a heat-proof or metal surface such as a disposable pie tin to catch hot glue that may drip from the gun.
- Insert one glue stick through the back of the gun. Plug in the glue gun or charge a cordless glue gun. If your gun has a power switch, turn it on.
- Squeeze the glue gun's trigger gently to move the glue stick into place. Wait for the glue to begin melting. The glue gun is ready when hot glue begins oozing from the nozzle.
Use the Glue Gun
- Hold the glue gun nozzle about a l/4-inch away from the item you are gluing. Avoid touching the item directly with the hot nozzle.
- Squeeze the trigger gently to begin the flow of hot glue. Depending on the size and shape of your craft project, allow small droplets or a thin line of glue to flow onto the surface. Release the trigger and move the glue gun to the heat-proof surface.
- Press the craft items together as desired. Let the hot melt glue cool and set---about five minutes. Use scissors to snip off any cooled glue strands.
- Unplug the gun immediately after use.
Tips & Warnings
- Follow hot glue gun safety measures provided by the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources "Hot Glue-Gun Safety" notes (see References).
