How to use a grease gun:

    • Parts of your car need greasing, and this is the tool you use to inject grease in to difficult areas, usually through 'grease nipples,' for example every few thousand miles / years it's worth greasing the front axle on an old VW
    • Once you can see how it comes apart and loads, you won't need much more help using a grease gun, so read on for the simple procedure
    • To load a grease gun with grease, first unscrew the barrel from the handle/trigger unit. The barrel is where the grease goes and you've got two options. If you've got a new tub of grease with a large plastic washer in like I have below then you can load the grease directly in to the gun from the tub. Otherwise you're going to have to load the grease in gradually by using something like a spoon. If you do use a spoon, don't use the one you're going to eat pudding with later
    • Here you can see I've got the barrel off the gun and I'm getting it lined up with the opening in the middle of the 'washer' in the tub of grease. You can't see the plunger at the end of the barrel as my hand is over it, but it's a long way in to the barrel
    • Once you've got the opening in the barrel over the opening in the tub of grease, push down on the barrel and pull up on the plunger at the same time. If you've got a tab that keeps the plunger still, you might need to press it / fiddle with it to get it to release so you can pull the plunger up. As you push down / pull up the grease is pulled in to the gun. When the gun is full or tub of grease is empty, move the barrel sideways to cut off the pillar of grease you've made inside the barrel, then clean off the end of the barrel with a bit of cardboard / rag before screwing it back in to the handle/injector unit
    • Below pushing the barrel in to the tub of grease and pulling up on the plunger, which isn't very obvious due to the angle
    • Once the grease gun is back together, you just need to pump the handle to get grease coming out of the injector end. Sometimes you might need to fiddle with the tab that holds the plunger from pushing back in or give the end of the injector a push to allow the pumping to happen smoothly

    How a Grease Gun Works:

What Grease Guns are Used For

    • Grease fittings or zerk fittings are located on many light to heavy duty trucks and SUVs. Some cars are still manufactured with grease fittings on the chassis components. Large commercial trucks have several zerk fittings located throughout the chassis, U-joints, drive shafts and other places that require lubrication. Lawn and garden tractors that use a pinion steering system may have tie rod ends and ball joints with zerk fittings requiring occasional grease. Mower decks for riding lawn mowers often have zerk fittings on the individual arbors of the deck. Industrial equipment for factories often have zerk fittings for machinery used requiring scheduled grease applications

    Different Types of Grease Guns

    • The most common grease gun is the hand-lever style for its economical price. This type can be more difficult to operate however, because the aperture on the tip of the hose on the grease gun sometimes requires pressure applied (by hand) to the zerk fitting in order to properly pump grease into the fitting. The hand-lever style requires one hand to hold the chamber of the gun steady while pumping the lever with the other hand, leaving no hands to apply pressure to the aperture. A finger-trigger or hand-trigger type grease gun is a better alternative because you can hold the gun and then squeeze the trigger with the same hand while using your opposite hand to apply the necessary pressure to the aperture on the zerk fitting
    • Another less popular style grease gun uses a manually pressurized chamber without a trigger or lever apparatus. The placement of the aperture onto the zerk fitting releases the pressure and purges grease into the fitting
    • Some grease guns use pneumatic pressure instead of the manual spring-loaded plunger. This type is found in shops that use air compressors for their equipment where a lot of grease is used. Often times, the grease provided to the guns is stored in large barrels and the air compressors apply the pressure from a pump placed at the top of the barrel, through a pneumatic hose and into the gun. Pulling the trigger of this style gun will continuously pump grease from the aperture until the trigger is released

  • Other Thoughts: I purchased this for our son who had one previously and it got stolen. He was quit lost without the luber because he works construction and has to lube the equipment that he works with. What labor saver and time saver. Works great and does every thing that he needs.

  • Other Thoughts: This lincoln power lubber works great. It saves a lot of time and energy. We have been able to grease some fittings with this thing that we could not do by hand. This thing puts so much more pressure than you can by hand. I highly recommend this product.

00:00:00 03-05-2011 NICE Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: Wow, this grease gun delivers. Pulling the trigger causes the unit to rapidly pump grease into any zerk fitting. If the grease doesn't flow the unit will hang on tight until grease flows allowing you time to move something that opens up the grease path. Pump pulses many time per second to be careful on how long you pull the trigger. Wish I had purchased this unit many years ago!

00:00:00 01-25-2011 really like Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: I really like this grease gun. I have had no issues with priming. It's kind of a pain to hook it up to air all the time, sometimes I wish I had bought a battery powered one, but those probably wont last as long either.

00:00:00 01-07-2011 NICE Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: I have both manual and the air operated grease gun. There are many places that are really hard to access and use a manual gun. With the gun just connect it and pull the trigger. Really handy for 3point mowers, boats etc.
