How to Choose a Home Alarm System?

    Conducting Preliminary Research

    • Alarm systems for the home can be complicated and expensive, so it's crucial to determine your security needs before you begin consulting with alarm companies.
    • Survey your home and determine how many windows and doors you want to be 'switched,' or integrated into the home security system.
    • Determine possible locations for the control panel and keypads. You might find it convenient to place a keypad close to the front door. You might also want a keypad close to the bedrooms. The control panel commands the system, and the keypads allow you to program the system and turn it, or its components, on and off.
    • Determine how far away windows and doors are from the control panel so that you know how far wires will be routed if you choose a wired alarm system or how far a wireless system needs to communicate with sensors. Keep in mind that it is difficult to install a hard-wired security system unless your house is still under construction.
    • Decide whether you want a monitored security system that will be monitored 24 hours a day. The central monitoring station 'watches' your home for a monthly fee. A less expensive alternative is a basic sensor system with a dialer accessory that connects the system to your phone lines and dials preselected numbers if the house's security is breached.
    • Consider your lifestyle. Does anyone in the family often get up in the middle of the night for a snack? Do you have a large pet that roams the house at night? Such circumstances will influence the type of motion sensor you select and how it is installed. It may also call for you or members of your family to take trips to the keypad to prevent false alarms.

    Choosing the System

    • Consult with a reputable home security system adviser.
    • Choose a system with a control panel that can monitor all the zones you have in your home. Each window or door integrated into the system is considered a zone. A basic system is capable of controlling eight zones. However, many panels permit the addition of expansion modules that allow the system to watch up to 32 zones.
    • Determine if the routing of the wires for a hard-wired security system might be too long. With a wired system, you will have to drill holes in walls where wires will have to be routed. If the wire run appears too long to you, choose a wireless system.
    • Make certain that a wireless system can perform up to the distance of the farthest zone.
    • Be certain that the system you choose can accept fire-protection sensors, carbon monoxide sensors and combustible-gas detectors, anti-freeze-up low-temperature switches (especially in cold climates) and water detectors. Make sure that panic buttons are or can be included.
    • Choose a system that is user-friendly. Make certain that inputting codes into the keypad is not a complicated process and is one that everyone in the family can learn quickly. You don't want to have to refer to the owner's manual as you input or try to interpret codes.
    • Work the keypad of the system you select to assure yourself that it is easy to use. Encourage all family members to work the keypad so that you will select one that everyone can use comfortably.

great security for a great price

Very easy to set up and works as described. I am useing this in a seasonal home in Michigan. I had a family member enter the house without knowing about the alarm and low and behold it called me in Florida to let me know there was movement in our Michigan house. It will also reset its self and you can turn off the the inhouse siren so the intruder doesn't know that it is silently making phone calls to alert someone of their presents. Great value!

GSM Alarm System
00:00:00 06-02-2011
I had some glitches getting it set up and working but the e-mail customer service was fast and very helpful. System is working fine now. Have recommended it to friends. Just make sure you program it like they recommend (in a basement or a concrete room). Stray transmissions while programming the unit will cause the unit to alarm. The sirens are VERY loud.

Good System, Very Pleased

I would have to say for a DIY alarm system, the VG699 seems to be performing very well, setup was quite simple and installation of the sensors were even more simple. I would have to say that i am very satisfied and do not regret this purchase at all.

Good product, good price

We got this because we were quoted $1000 for installation and equipment on a new security system for our new warehouse (monitoring was an additional monthly fee). This was a much cheaper alternative while actually being a better system than the $1000 system we were quoted by the local security guy. When we got the system a few items were missing and two were non-functional. I contacted the seller and without question, they sent out replacement items. I didn't even have to send back the broken pieces!

So far so good
00:00:00 05-18-2011
The reason(s) that I bought:
I have been looking for a DIY security alarm, a cellular one, for awhile. To me AAS system is a very affordable one and easy to setup. Here is what I did.
1) read the manual to know how to program each device.
2) sketch a layout of your house and mark the place where each device would be installed.
3) program all devices that you are planned to use.
4) PreTest. REMEMBER : test, test, test ... BEFORE you install.
(without hooking up the sirens, armed your system after programmed, and trigger each at a time...)
5) PostTest. After you are done with your installation, remember to test the blind spots as well as liability tests. The more you test your setup, the less false you would get in the end.

So far the system has passed all my test(s). We have it tested for a week and then we have it up for REAL test(s) in about 2 weeks. So it is still way to early to say anything about liability yet; however, my family and I is very satisfied with this product.

Home Security GSM Alarm System
00:00:00 05-12-2011
The GSM home security system is a very good system. I was able to install the system in about 5hours. So far, the system has worked as described, no issues, the horn is very loud so all neigborhood will hear very clearly and will scare all instruders before they can damage all the goods inside the house. Very good price compare with the other brand. The features are very good. The instruction manual is easy to follow.

GSM Alarm System
00:00:00 05-06-2011
I've had this alarm for about a month now and haven't had any problems. After reading the entire installation manual I still had problems activating the sensors as the manual is confusing ... if you follow it exactly you're instructed to enter codes that cause the units not to activate. A quick call to AAS as answered promptly and when I asked for a call back at a certain, I was contacted at exactly the time I stated. EXCELLENT customer service and support. My only suggestion would be carefully going through the manual and correcting the misinformation. Otherwise, a great product. Sirens are REALLY loud, enough the get my neighbors attention. Easy to use (just remind yourself that you need to disarm it, too). I have recommended this product to a couple of people already.
