How to Keep Your Pet Safe in Your Car?

We love our dogs! We dress them up, treat them like children, take them with us to parks, work, outdoor shopping malls etc. But do we really stop to think if we are putting our beloved pets in danger by bringing them with us? Summer heat is one such danger that is all too often not considered when children or pets are left in the car unattended for what we feel is only a couple of minutes, but is that the only danger?

Dogs in Driver Seat:

• This is not only an unsafe practice, it is illegal in some counties or states across America
• The dog may see a cat, rabbit or other interesting thing and jump out of the car while it is in motion. Your automatic reaction would be to try to catch your friend and you could cause an accident
• Also should an accident occur in front of you, your reaction time would be greatly diminished by the dog on your lap impeding your arm movement

Dogs in Truck Beds:

• This is also a dangerous practice that has gone on for generations
• A dog loose in a truck bed is an accident just waiting to happen
• They slide around inside the bed during turns and sudden stops
• And, did anyone ever convince a dog that the rabbit, cat, squirrel or rival dog should not be chased from inside the truck bed
• Many dogs are injured or killed every year in accidents involving a loose dog in an open truck bed. Even more are injured when they jump from the truck while it is still moving
• Some people even think to tie their dog inside the truck but only use 1 tie or a cable with a 6 ft leash... end result is still the same, dog jumps out but now he is drug down the highway at 55+ MPH

• Almost every day you hear of some pet that had been missing for months only to be found on the other end of the country because of an implanted microchip
• Like any other form of identification you need to keep the database informed of any changes in address or phone numbers so that they can contact you incase your pet is lost and found
• Register that chip! It is sad when a dog is found and he has a microchip but that the chip was never registered with the national registry. Your local Veterinarian or animal control may have record of the microchip but unless you register it with the manufacturer it is pretty much a wasted effort as your pet may be found but no one knows where he belongs
• Have your Veterinarian scan for the microchip at every visit. Chips sometimes move and may even become lost in the body and you may never know your pet has lost his chip without checking. I know of one person who's dog has 3 chips because the first 2 apparently disappeared
• My own dog Jakes microchip has migrated from between his shoulder blades to the outside of his right shoulder blade

Tips & Warnings:

• Never leave kids or pets inside an unattended car for even a minute, temperatures can soar to 140 degrees inside a car in as few as 5 minutes
• Always make sure your dog is wearing his collar and tags
