    Hard Drive Enclosure Types:

Hard-drive components for computers are an important tool for backing up important data, like photos, movie files and work documents. Back-up systems are an important tool for any personal computer or business and should be used whenever you save important documents. They are relatively easy to use and are compatible on multiple operating systems. They come in both Firewire and USB interfaces, with a few different hard-drive enclosure types to choose from.

Ultra ULT40243 Aluminus Hard Drive Enclosure:

    • The Ultra ULT40243 is an aluminum case that has been specially designed to fit wit 2.5-inch SATA hard drives. 2.5-inch hard drives are much smaller than their 3.5-inch counterparts and are suitable as portable travel drives. The aluminum materials are used to draw heat away from hard drive, eliminating overheating issues that plague plastic hard drive enclosure cases. The case is compatible with Windows XP, ME, Vista and Mac 10.0 and higher. Using a USB 2.0 interface, the enclosure is hot swappable and utilizes the fast transfer speeds of the newer USB interface

    Vantec NexStar3 NST-360SU-BL HD Enclosure:

    • The NexStar3 External SATA Hard Drive Enclosure from Vantec is an enclosure that is compatible with a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive. The 3.5-inch size is suited to larger desktop hard drives and functional for more computer intensive tasks, which require faster, higher-capacity hard drives. The outer casing is made from aluminum materials, which helps dissipates heat away from the inner drive. The drive relies on a USB 2.0 interface, making the drive hot swappable. The case is compatible with Windows XP, ME, Vista and Mac 10.0 and higher

Sans Digital MobileSTOR MS1CT Hard Drive Enclosure:

    • Sans Digital MobileSTOR MS1CT Hard Drive Enclosure is outfitted with both a Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 interface, making it a versatile option as a hard drive enclosure. The enclosure is constructed from aluminum materials and accepts a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive. The case is compatible with Windows XP, ME, Vista and Mac 10.0 and higher. The multi-interface of the enclosure and ability to accept high capacity drives means it can be used for graphic design, video editing and gaming

How to Use an External Hard Drive as an Internal Drive?

First you are going to flip over the external hard drive case and locate the screws. Take out all the screws and the case cover should pop right off. At this point you can see the hard drive inside

Look to see if the hard drive is fastened into the case with more screws if so please take the screws out. Unplug the cables going to the hard drive from the case, there should be 2 one for power which is short plug and one that is a long thin plug which is what transfers the data

    USB HDD External Case

    • IDE Cable, this is the cable that transfers the data

You need to open your computer now, most computers have a few screws on the back and the case comes apart or one side comes off the case so that you can see the innards of the computer. On the hard drive you need to change it to slave or master depending on if you want the hard drive to be the main hard drive(Master) or to be extra storage(Slave). Each hard drive has the layout on a diagram on the top of the hard drive. Cable Select will let the computer choose if it is master or slave depending on if it is first or second on the cable]

    HDD External Cas

    • CS = Cable Select, SL = Slave, MA = Master

You will need to insert the internal hard drive into one of the slots, making sure that the screw holes are lined up correctly. Screw in the screws to hold the hard drive in place, usually 2 are used. If you have access to both sides of the computer you should put 2 screws in on both sides

Sinorum 3.5inch USB 2.0 to IDE HDD Hard Disk Drive External Enclosure Case

    • Inserting and installing screws for the hard drive to stay in place

You are now going to look for the IDE cable like in the photo in step 2. You will need to plug this into the back of your hard drive that you have taken out of the external case. You will also need to locate the power cable and plug it into the back of the hard drive too. The power cable looks like the cable in the photo, the right hand side is the cable end you will be looking for

    IDE HDD External Case

    • This is a power cable inside the computer, though it is usually a little bit longer

Now that both cables are plugged in and the hard drive is installed in the computer you can put the case back on your computer and start it up. You now have a new external hard drive installed internally

Here is a picture of a SATA cable which is the newer version of the IDE cable, you may need to use this if the hard drive and computer are newer

    USB HDD External Case

    • SATA Cable
    • This photo is of an adaptor you can get to change your power cable over to SATA power cable

    HDD External Cas

    • SATA power cable 4 pin to 15 pin

    Package Included:

    • 1 x HDD Enclosure
    • 1 x USB Cable
    • 1 x Power

  • Other Thoughts: The product is easy to install, the screws are small and easily lost, the case heats up a little, the metal is thin and light, it is generally recommended that a product works as well as the most expensive. I would buy again.

  • Other Thoughts: I had an old laptop drive that I wanted to use and this was the perfect solution. Been using it for about a month and have had no problems whatsoever. Installation was easy and self explanatory. The included usb-y cable is very nice as I am using 1.1. Great enclosure for the price.

00:00:00 01-25-2011 Excellent value and profile Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: This enclosure is an excellent value. Performance has been trouble-free, and it worked right out of the box - no problems whatsoever. After I added my laptop drive (perfect fit) and connected it to two of my USB ports (one for power, one for data), it was recognized immediately by my Windows XP computer. It has a slim lightweight compact profile which works well for travel, and has a very tight USB connection. I would highly recommend this enclosure over more expensive enclosures offered by others.

00:00:00 01-15-2011 life saver Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: I recently bought this USB HDD external case after using one at work and I got one just in time. My laptop motherboard blew up and i had no way of getting the files from my hard drive back. So i removed the hard drive plugged it in the case and plugged the case into my desktop and almost instantly the hard rive popped up allowing me to copy over my files that I thought where gone forever. This truly is a life saver!
