How to Use an Electric Hedge Trimmer

Summer is a good time to get out in the yard and trim hedges, plants and flowers, and spruce up the lawn. Hedges can be the hardest part of your summertime job. Some hedges grow fast and can quickly become overgrown. Knowing how to use an electric hedge trimmer can make your trimming job easier, and you can throw away that manual trimmer that never seems to make the hedges look as beautiful as you would like.- Plug the cord of the hedge trimmer into a long enough extension cord with enough slack so that you are not restricting the movement of the trimmer. You will be making upward and downward movements as well as side-to-side movements.
- Start trimming the hedge on the bottom. Hold the hedge trimmer with two hands and place it at the base of the hedge, slowly moving it in an upward direction. How deeply you trim depends on the size of the hedge you want. Most hedges are smaller at the bottom and wider at the top.
- Move around the hedge, continuing to start at the bottom and move upward to the top. Some areas will need a sideways sweep to get branches that moved out of the way when you were doing the upward sweep.
- Hold the hedge trimmer straight out from your body to do the top. You can make a rounded top or a square top. The square top requires moving the trimmer across the top from side to side. For rounded edges, start about 2 inches from the top and move the trimmer inward as you go up to the top. Repeat until you have a smooth rounded top.
How to Clean a Hedge Trimmer

A hedge trimmer is a piece of garden equipment used to shape and trim shrubs, bushes and small trees. Hedge trimmers come in manual, gas-powered and electrical models. Regular cleaning of the hedge trimmers prevents rust and keeps the tool operating like new, longer. Gardeners should clean the hedge-trimmer blades after each use.
- Unplug your hedge trimmer, if it is power operated. Run a nylon scrub brush over the blades of the hedge trimmers to get rid of any dirt or debris.
- Fill a small bowl with warm water and add 1 to 2 tbsp. of liquid dish soap. Dip the scrub brush into the water and gently scrub the blades clean.
- Dampen the edge of a clean towel and wipe the blades down to rinse them. Run a dry portion of the towel over the blades to remove any water.
- Moisten a clean rag with light machine oil and run the rag over the top of the hedge-trimmer blade, if you have a power operated model. For manual hedge trimmers, spray a light lubricant into the joint where the blades meet near the handle. Open and close the handles three times to work the lubricant into the area.

03-15-2011- Other Thoughts: Bought it on Sunday and it arrived on Wednesday. I used it on my hedges that day and it worked great. It didn't have enough power for the thickest lower branches, but it had plenty of power for shaping and trimming the hedges.

04-20-2011- Other Thoughts: With the gas hedger, I didn't had to deal with electric cord. It's important to follow the direction when cranking. The hedger does gets heavy after a while, I have a lot of bushes around my house. Earplugs are a must, it gets loud. Had it for 4 months, so far no problems.

02-10-2011- Other Thoughts: I found the other reviews to be fairly accurate, this trimmer is not for commercial use. It works above and beyond my electric trimmer, and no long elec. cord to drag n cut. For an Economical cordless trimmer, the Hedge Trimmer works for the jobs I need done at home.

04-07-2011- Other Thoughts: Well constructed trimmer and perfect size. It is a little heavy if you plan on hours of trimming, but hey it is a solid well-built machine. Cuts quickly and accurately. The dead man switch is no problem in my opinion - I got used to this safety feature after about 2 minutes. I would recommend this trimmer.
