How to Decorate Coat Hangers
Design creative door hanger signs, eye-catching coat hangers to hang on a coat rack in the entryway or a set of personalized hangers as a baby or bridal shower gift with craft supplies and inexpensive wood hangers. Create the stylish household tools using materials like patterned paper, acrylic paint and dimensional embellishments. Choose between subtle neutral shades, vibrant accents or pastel-colored items to suit the gift recipient's taste or coordinate with the room decor where you plan to display the accessories.
Instructions- Prepare your work surface by laying a plastic tarp or old tablecloth over the table to protect it from paints, primers and adhesives.
- Coat the wood surface of the hanger with a light layer of wood primer using a paintbrush. Allow the layer of primer to dry for at least one hour.
- Paint the hanger with two coats of acrylic paint in a shade that coordinates with the room decorations or the embellishments you plan to use on the hanger. Let the paint dry at least one hour between coats.
- Sand the edges of the frame with a piece of fine-grain sandpaper to allow the original wood to show through in spots to give the hanger a rustic, homespun look. Use a soft cloth to wipe away any residue left from the sandpaper to prepare the surface for the embellishments.
- Create a flat, subtle background pattern on the embellished wood hanger. Add decorative rub-on transfers by placing the transfer sheet face down on the hanger and rubbing over the design with a wood stick; hand paint decorative flowers and flourishes along the wood; or apply rubber-stamped images with colorful ink, for example.
- Turn the decorative hanger into a sign to hang on a doorknob by using alphabet rubber stamps, letter stickers or self-adhesive chipboard letters to add words across the wood. Use a phrase such as, "Quiet. Sleeping Baby Ahead," "Entering the Study Zone" or "Privacy Please."
- Embellish the hanger with dimensional accents instead of stamp, sticker or chipboard letters if you simply want to decorate it to use or give as a gift. Affix accents such as buttons, paper flowers, rhinestones or acrylic accents to the wood with adhesive dots.
Tips & Warnings
- When adding dimensional embellishments to a decorative wood hanger that you plan to use or give as a present, contain the accents to the center of the hanger, the portion closest to the metal hook. If you affix any accents along the "arms" of the hanger, they'll fall off if you use the hanger to hold coats or items of clothing.
- If you're making personalized clothes hangers for a baby or toddler's room, avoid adorning them with dimensional accents like plastic gems or buttons that can fall off of the hanger and become a choking hazard.
How to Remove Adhesive Hooks
Self-adhesive hooks are available in an assortment of styles and strengths for different decors and needs. Older hooks can be hard to remove without damaging the wall. Current hooks are designed to be removed without damage to the walls and paint jobs. To remove a self-adhesive hook, first slowly and carefully pull the adhesive removal tab. If you pull the tab too quickly it may snap and you will need to take additional steps to remove the hooks without damaging the walls.
Instructions- Vinegar: Pour a small amount of white vinegar into a bowl. Dip a sponge into the vinegar. Squeeze the sponge to drip the vinegar in between the hook and wall. Let the vinegar sit for a few minutes in order to loosen the adhesive. Carefully pull off the hook.
- Dental Floss: Use a blow dryer to heat the adhesive by pointing it at the hook. Slide dental floss in between the hook and wall. Pull the adhesive tab and remove the hook.

01-27-2011- Other Thoughts: These Decorative Wall hooks are great hangers. I was skeptical about them at first; but they really do take up a lot less space and clothes that have the thin straps do not fall off the hanger. Plus the hangers are very pretty and do look nice in the closet. I would definitely buy them again.
