How to Use a Slave Flash Unit With Your Digital Camera:

    Remote Flash Trigger

    • A slave unit is a photography device used to activate external flash units that are not connected to the camera. Most external units use a cable or wireless transmitter to fire, which works in most situations. A slave unit is a light sensor that activates the external flash when a burst of light hits it. This can be useful for tricky lighting situations or to fire multiple flashes with one mechanism. To use a slave flash unit, you need to initially fire a flash from your camera
    • Place the camera and your subject in your desired locations
    • Place the flash unit in an area that satisfies your lighting requirements and is within your camera's flash radius
    • Orient the flash unit so the slave receptor is facing your camera. It must be able to be stimulated by your camera's flash to fire. This may require a few test shots.
    • Tape a small white piece of paper to your flash if the slave unit is unable to directly face the flash. Orient the paper so that it catches the initial flash and then bounces it toward the slave unit
    • Recompose the subject and camera in its place and take the photo. The flash from your camera should activate the slave unit

How to Use a Phottix Wireless Flash & Camera Trigger:

    Flash Slave Trigger

The Phottix wireless flash and camera trigger can be handy tools for photographers to have in their camera bags. They work by first syncing your camera to your light source then syncing your light source to your camera. This allows for remote operation of your light sources. The device will work with both flashes or studio lights and set-up is easy to do; the whole process takes just a few minutes

    Instructions

    • Remove the battery cover door from the receiver and install two AAA batteries. Replace the door. The transmitter comes with a pre-installed battery
    • Slide your flash unit onto the hot shoe of the receiver in the same fashion as though you were putting it on your camera. If your flash uses a PC sync cable, attach the cable to the PC sync socket which is located on the side of the receiver. For use with studio lights plug in the PC sync cable into the receiver and connect the ¼-inch converter to the opposite end of the cable. Plug the ¼-inch converter into your studio lights
    • Attach the Phottix receiver and flash unit to your tripod or light stand by screwing it onto the ¼-inch tripod mount on the receivers L-bracket, located on the bottom of the device. If your tripod or light stand has a hot shoe attachment. You can slide the receiver onto the hot shoe clip also using the receivers L-bracket
    • Switch the channel numbers on the receiver and the transmitter to the same setting. On the receiver the channel numbers are located on a small blue panel on the front of the device. The channel numbers on the transmitter are also located on a small blue panel but on the bottom of the device. Press the test button located on top of the transmitter; the LED on the receiver will flash briefly to signal that the units are working together
    • Slide the transmitter onto the hot shoe of your camera just as you would a regular flash and begin taking photographs

  • Other Thoughts: This remote Trigger Sensor works great! I really impress people with the ability to take a picture remotely. Perfect for those family shots where you are trying to get everyone to smile and you have to get in the picture as well. I believe Nikon could sell their SLR's better if they marketed this nice feature.

  • Other Thoughts: The device works as advertised. The range is limited, especially if you have sunlight directly hitting the infrared sensor on the camera. Indoors I have not had any problems.
