Size in Detail:

Introduction:

- An hourglass (sandglass, sand timer, sand clock, egg timer) measures the passage of a few minutes or an hour of time. It has two connected vertical glass bulbs allowing a regulated trickle of material from the top to the bottom. Once the top bulb is empty, it can be inverted to begin timing again. The name hourglass comes from historically common hour timing. Factors affecting the time measured include the amount of sand, the bulb size, the neck width, and the sand quality. Alternatives to sand are powdered eggshell and powdered marble. (Sources disagree on the best material.) Modernly, hourglasses are ornamental or used when an approximate measure suffices, as in egg timers for cooking or for board games
Modern practical uses:
- While they are no longer widely used for keeping time, some institutions do maintain them. Both houses of the Australian Parliament use three hourglasses to time certain procedures, such as divisions
- The sandglass is still widely used as the kitchen egg timer; for cooking eggs, a three minute timer is typical. Hence the name "egg timer" for three minute hourglasses. Egg timers are sold widely as souvenirs

12-10-2010- Other Thoughts: I purchased this timer as a "time-out" timer for my daughter. I have it set on 5 minutes and I just hit start and the digital sand starts going. When 5 minutes is up, it flashes red and has a light beeping sound to alert both me and my daughter when time-out is over. Watching the digital sand fall keeps her busy for a few minutes and she knows she needs to wait for the light to flash and sound to beep and then she's free again.

With just a few sessions with this clock she's learned what a "time-out" is! It's awesome!

Then I just flip it over and it becomes a a clock.

12-21-2010- Other Thoughts: This is exactly what i was looking for. You can get any generic egg timer, but this one is digital and when flipped is a clock or a timer. Either setting to count down your time for your cookies with beeper, or start timing (how long has the turkey been in for?) dinner! This is the best little timer, a must have for every kitchen!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

09-06-2010- Other Thoughts: I (the wife, not Randy) bought the red one for a shower gift for a bride who's kitchen colors are red, white, & chrome. I'm sure she will love it. I got the white one as a gift at Christmas and absolutely love it! The digital sand effect is fun and I keep it on the shelf above the sink to use as a digital clock, then just flip it over to run the timer. A great plus is that it doesn't use expensive watch batteries like many do so it won't cost much to replace them when they need to be replaced. Mine is still running on the original battery. A great conversation piece and a cute addition to any kitchen!

10-20-2010- Other Thoughts: My sister-in-law has a kitchen with red accents and she likes modern, funky things, so when I discovered this, I figured I would give it a try....When it came, I was a bit disappointed because it looked more plastic than it did in the picture, but still, for the price, looked like a cool gift. She loves it - she uses it daily and says she has never had a problem...I've never seen another one like it and it has some really cool features I didn't know about when I bought it - the clock is cool and she likes how it continues to keep the time even when it has gone off, so she knows how long it's been done if she misses it for some reason.... A great and unique gift!

11-09-2010- Other Thoughts: This timer works pretty well so far. It is a little hard to see through the thick curved plastic as mentioned in some other reviews but since I am usually within a couple feet of it, I can just reach over and see it up close. It does everything it is suposed to and has even withstood numerous accidental (and a few not so accidental!) falls from my son's bedside table. He loves that you can flip it over for the time and back for the timer and I love that it has sand icons that show him approximately how much time is left, just like a real sand timer would!
