How to Replace Cable 3 on an iPhone 3G

Among the many advanced features of the iPhone 3G is its internal design, including the iPhone's cabling system. Each hardware component is attached to one of six cables that are labeled 1 through 6. Cable 3 inside your iPhone connects directly to the speaker and earpiece sensor. If you experience major audio issues, chances are that Cable 3 has become disconnected or damaged. Replacing the cable requires that you dismantle the iPhone. This will void your phone's warranty agreement.

• Hold down the "sleep" button in the upper-right corner of the iPhone until the slider screen appears on your iPhone. Push the virtual slider button to the right until the iPhone's operating system shuts down.
• Insert the iPhone SIM card removal tool, or a paper clip, into the SIM card release hole on the top edge of the phone's case. Push the tool into the hole to eject the SIM card compartment from the phone.
• Remove the two, precision-sized Phillips screws on the bottom edge of the iPhone on either side of the data port. Place a professional-grade suction cup on the touchscreen's surface. Press down on the suction cup and release to attach the suction cup to the screen. Pull up on the suction cup to separate the touchscreen from the phone's back panel.
• Tilt the touchscreen upward until it is in the 90-degree position, revealing the main circuit board inside the phone's casing. Use a plastic spudger to disconnect the black cables labeled "1" and "2" located in the upper-left corner of the circuit board. A spudger is a black, plastic disassembly tool resembling a flat-head screwdriver used in laptop and electronics disassembly.
• Use the spudger to disconnect the cable labeled "3" from the circuit board, and from the connector on the back side of the phone's front panel. Dispose of the bad cable.
• Place the replacement "3" cable inside the phone. Connect one end of the cable to the connector on the circuit board and the other end to the connector on the phone's front panel. Reconnect cables "1" and "2" to their respective connectors on the circuit board.
• Place the touchscreen panel back on top of the phone's rear panel. Press down on the touchscreen so it reattaches to the phone's back panel casing. Replace the two Phillips-head screws on the bottom edge of the phone's case, and replace the SIM card.
