Etymology:
- The word bucket appeared in the 13th century. It possibly derives from the Old English word "buc," meaning pitcher, bulging vessel or belly. Animal organs may have constituted the earliest buckets
Firefighting:
- Leather buckets appeared in most early American homes.Leather buckets, made from animal hides, became standard household items in Colonial America. Men and boys attended fires with buckets personally marked for easy retrieval after the confusion
Wooden Buckets:
- Wooden buckets elicit notions of simpler times.Coopers fashioned wooden buckets by fitting wooden staves inside metal rings in the Middle Ages. Wet coopers specialized in watertight buckets, while dry coopers made buckets that could not hold water
Galvanized Iron:
- Iron trumped wood for sturdiness.Stanislas Sorel patented galvanization in 1837. The metallurgical process shielded iron or steel with a zinc-coating. How to Make an Ice Bucket?
Prep the Gear:- Peel labels off the paint cans and remove any residual adhesive
- Remove handle from smaller paint can using pliers
- Clean interior of larger can to ensure that it's free of loose debris
Build Mold:
- Set a 1-gallon paint can inside the larger can and line it up so the handle joints of the large can line up with the holes where the handle of the smaller can attached
- Tie one end of string to the base of the handle on the larger can, and feed the string through the near hole in the smaller can. Pull string taut and tie a knot on the inside of the smaller can
- Feed string through hole on the other side of the small can and pull taut. Mark the string just inside the smaller can
- Pull the string out of the hole and tie a knot at the marked spot, then feed the free end back through the hole and tie it around the handle of the larger can, making sure the string stays taut all the while
- The small can should now be hanging from the string, not touching the bottom or sides of the large can
Create Ice Bucket:
- Fill the space between cans with purified water. If desired, add four drops of food coloring in the water equally spaced around the can
- Carefully place can mold into a freezer or an ice chest, making sure the bottom is level. Freeze for at least three hours or overnight
- Remove frozen mold from freezer and cut and discard string
- Heat cans to unmold the ice bucket: Submerge entire mold in hot water for 10 seconds. Fill interior can with hot water for 10 seconds
- Gently rotate interior can until it can be pulled free, then invert large can and slip it off the ice
- Fill ice bucket with chilled bottles of wine or other beverages, and top with ice cubes

11-02-2010- Other Thoughts: This ice bucket is outstanding in quality. It looks much nicer than I saw online and is of high quality. Slightly smaller than I thought but I am very happy. It holds one gallon of water for those who need some kind of measurment since no site gives that info.

11-13-2010- Other Thoughts: It's something I would always forget about but something I needed for entertaining -- an ice bucket. I finally remembered to get one. I chose this one primarily because of its design. It *is* lovely, but it's also functional and convenient. (It's dishwasher safe!) It added a very nice touch to my most recent party, and I was very pleased with the price.

12-09-2010- Other Thoughts: I looked around for a ice bucket that would be a nice gift for my mother-in-law. One that looked good enough for dinner parties and didn't 'sweat'. This one kept ice for the entire afternoon/evening and didn't leave a mark on the table. Highly recommend.
