How to Buy a Baseball Glove:
- Match the baseball glove to the position. Playing first base requires you buy a first baseman glove which is officially called a first baseman's mitt because it has no fingers and is better at directing incoming hard throws into the pocket. Playing catcher on a baseball team requires you buy a catchers glove which is officially called a catcher's mitt because it has no fingers, a lot of extra padding and is better at directing incoming hard throws into the pocket of the mitt. Playing any other position indicates you will buy a baseball glove(they have fingers). Rotating through positions? Buy the best baseball glove for you and the league will most likely supply the catchers gear which will come with a catchers mitt, and a first basemans glove.
- Budget how much you want to spend, for example, Mizuno baseball gloves can range from 30.00 to 300.00. Buying a high quality baseball glove with soft, maleable leather will immediately give you the lived-in field. Remember that the $30.00 glove will be less durable than the $300.00 glove and this should guide how you set your budget. Buying a youth baseball glove may drive you to the lower end of the budget because kids will need larger gloves every year or so.
- Size the youth baseball glove to the age of the child playing baseball; 5-6 years old need a youth glove size = 10-10 1/2, 7-8 years old need a youth glove size = 10 1/2 to 11, 9-12 year old need a youth glove size = 11 to 11 1/2, 13 years old and up are out of the youth models and need adult gloves. Buy a baseball glove size for a 13 year old and older either an infielder size 11-11 1/2" or an outfielder size 12 - 12 1/2" or both. (See Additional Resources below for the source of this information from Dick's Sporting Goods.) Lean toward buying both if the youth is rotating positions between the infield and the outfield. Buying a new glove of a different size can cause an adjustment period, keep the old one in the bat bag and move back and forth between gloves when shagging flys during practice or fielding grounders to help with the transition and it can help to keep them fluid as they change positions and equipment.
- Condition gloves with an occassional oiling is OK but never put a glove in the microwave or heat them up as was once the tradition. Buying new baseball gloves has the advantage that they are better engineered than the ones you had as a kid and do not need a lot of attention.
