How to Wire an Extension Cable?

Extension cables are used to extend the electrical cord of an electric device. Many different sizes, lengths, and types can be found at stores such as Walmart, Lowe's, and Home Depot. The important thing to remember about extension cables is gauge. The extension cable gauge should always be larger than the electrical cord it is extending. If not, the extension cable as well as the electrical cord of the device will begin to heat up due to the excessive resistance.

• Remove the first plug cover and slip it over one end of the 10-2 cable. Strip 1/2 of an inch of insulation off of the black and white wires. Connect the black wire to the bronze terminal in the first plug and screw it tight. Connect the white wire to the silver terminal and screw it tight. Connect the ground wire to the ground terminal and screw it down.
• Push the plug cover back down over the wires to cover the exposed wires. Some of these type of plugs have a special seal if it is gong to be used outside in a wet environment.
• Repeat step 1 for the second plug at the opposite end of the extension cable. Use a ohmmeter to check continuity between the two ends. To do this, turn the ohmmeter on. Place one ohmmeter probe on the ground prong of the first plug and place the other probe on the ground prong of the second plug. The ohmmeter resistance should be zero. Repeat this process for each prong.
