    How to Measure Yourself:

    Single Breasted Suit Jacket

    • Chest(A): Measure just under the arms and across shoulder blades with arms relaxed at side. Keep tape level
    • Waist(B): Measure around the waist (Waist is taken where you bend)
    • Shoulder(C): Measure from the inseam of the left outer shoulder across to the right shoulder seam
    • Total Length(D): Measure from center base of the neck, down the spine to the waist
    • Sleeve(E): With arm relaxed at side and slightly bent measure from center back neck, over point of shoulder down the outside of the arm to wrist bone

How to Measure Men's Suit Size:

    One Button Suit Jacket

When the goal is to buy a men's suit off the rack, it is a good idea to take a few measurements first. This action will help to ensure that the selected suit will have a comfortable general fit that requires little or no alterations. Fortunately, even a novice can take accurate measurements and thus set the stage for purchasing a suit that will fit properly

    • Begin the process by measuring the chest. The proper way to do this is have the gentleman raise the arms slightly. A position with the elbows level with the shoulders is sufficient. Position the tape measure so it crosses over the shoulder blades of the back and at the thickest portion of the chest, usually across the breast area. Suits are usually sized according to this measurement, so if the gentleman has a 40 inch chest measurement, he will wear a size 40 suit
    • Measure the arm length. This is accomplished by having the gentleman lower the arm to his side, and cup the fingers into a light grip. Measure from the shoulder to the tips of the fingers in the grip position. Pre-tailored suits are usually sold as shorts, longs, and regulars. The arm measurement helps to determine which of these three designations will be most appropriate for the jacket
    • The waist for the pants is the next measurement to take. Be sure to measure at the waist position that the gentleman normally wears the pants. In general, the waist size on a pre-made suit will be six inches less than the chest measurement. Knowing the actual waist size in advance will provide some idea of how much tailoring needs to be done in order to make the pants a perfect fit around the waist
    • Finally, measure the legs for the pants. Many pre-made suits do not come with a finished hem, which makes it possible to alter the pants to fit the height of the buyer. First, take the outside leg measurement by beginning at the waist and measuring to the area just above the heel. For the inside leg measurement, begin at the crotch and measure to the ankle bone. These two figures should result in a hem that will break properly over the top of the shoes without puddling
    • Try on the suit jacket and pants and make sure the measurements are accurate

    About Men's Suits:

The love-hate relationship between men and their suits is a common occurrence. Fashionable men cannot live with out a sartorially splendid, tailor-made suit. However, men who prefer casual clothing---jeans, sweats, chinos, and jerseys---are often afraid to cross over into the dapper world of suits for men. Whether you prefer double-breasted worsted wool, single-breasted cotton over a four-button, linen suit, purchasing your first men's suit is a solid investment in your wardrobe's future

    • History: Throughout history, men donned suits to gain respect from their peers and the admiration of women. The wearing of suits originated as a style of dress in the 17th century as men, who historically dressed more ornately than women, downgraded their highly-festooned jackets and pants to a simpler manner of dress. In the 19th century European men in particular sought a comfortable alternative to the standard bulky attire of the period, and thus the modern suit was born
    • Business Suits: Particularly during times of economic upheaval and transition from one social class to another, men wore suits to exude confidence and an air of wealth and luxury. During the American Great Depression, men's suits received a noticeable revival as men wore suits to remove any doubts of financial instability and remain positive about the future. In the 21st century, the return of wearing formal men's suits to work is now mandatory work attire for workers of prestigious Wall Street Firms such as Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns. As stock prices rise and fall, these legendary brokerage firms use conservative men's suit to reassure their customers and media analysts that their personnel are prepared, professional and competent
    • Types: A man's suit is comprised of a jacket and pair of pants created from a common piece of fabric. Some also have vests made of the same fabric. The two cuts of suits are referred to as two-piece and three-piece suits respectively. Suiting is also separated by whether it is made to order or mass-produced. Men's suits are constructed of the following fabrics: polyester, rayon, merino wool, silk, cotton seersucker, worsted wool, gabardine, and linen. The categories for types of suits are referred to as bespoke or custom tailoring, ready-to-wear and made to measure. Custom men's suits, which are the most expensive category, require months of work to create and are made specifically to the customer's measurements. Ready-to-wear suiting is mass produced and available in department stores and boutiques. Made to measure suits involve the selection of fabric, buttons and style of the men's suit by the customer. These suits are constructed in a factory, prior to the initial fitting and then customized to the client's wishes
    • Considerations: Whether made of Super 220 merino wool or polyester, a conservative men's suit is recognized as the uniform of well-dressed business leaders, royalty and common men alike. As colors, textures and patterns of suits vary from a basic pinstriped blue to a more outrageously colored red, purple or yellow suit, the connotation of the wearer's profession and perceived power may be downgraded from respectable to seedy
    • Accessories and Style: Men's suits are accentuated with ties, braces, handkerchiefs (pocket squares), and ascots. For black-tie occasions, a tuxedo is a type of man's suit that is completed with a white or black bow tie. Double-breasted suits are always worn fastened. In contrast, single button suits may be worn completely unbuttoned or with a few top buttons fastened. American, Italian and British suits all vary not only by choice of designer, but with their approach to construction and unique style elements

How to Buy a Man's Suit:

Whether you need another suit for the office or want to dress to impress at an upcoming special occasion, a sharp suit is a wardrobe essential. The trick is to buy the best quality you can afford in an all season fabric, and a style that won't look dated too soon

    • Expect to pay at least $300 to $400. Suits can cost from $200 to $2,000 or more. The best values come from finding originally expensive ones on sale. Watch for sales and get on the mailing lists of your favorite stores. But remember, even an expensive suit will lose its charm if it doesn't fit you well
    • Get measured for your correct size pants and jacket. Sizes include a number (for example, even numbers between 36 and 56) plus a short, regular, long or extra-long designation
    • Look for an all-season fabric. All-wool fabric wears longer and looks better than wool-polyester blends, but blends typically wrinkle less. Other options are twill, linen and wool crepe. If you choose a pattern, such as pinstripe, opt for a flattering, versatile color such as navy or charcoal
    • Select a jacket style. The three-button jacket is a classic look, but some men prefer a two-button or double-breasted jacket, which is better for thin men. Make sure the jacket buttons easily and doesn't pull on either side, whether you're standing up or sitting down. Make sure you can move your arms freely. The lapels should lie flat and show a 1/2-inch (1 cm) rim of shirt collar. Shoulders cannot be altered, so make sure they aren't bulging or too boxy. The sleeves should extend to about the wrist bone. The jacket should be fully lined with no puckering seams
    • Select a pants style. Flat-front pants tend to be more slimming, while pleats and cuffs can make the pants dressier. (Shorter men, however, should avoid cuffs.) Go for lined pants that rest comfortably on your waist. When they're hemmed, they should break at the laces of your shoes and hit just above your heel

How to Pack a Men's Suit:

In order to stay on top of your business game, you need to keep those clothes pressed and ready. When traveling, in order to keep that suit from wrinkling, you need to pack it and pack it well. Here is a way that you can pack a men's suit for optimal protection and neatness. When you unpack at your hotel, nobody will be able to tell the long journey that it went on with you

    • Pack the Suitcase: Before trying to pack the suit it is important to fill the suitcase with all other pieces of clothing and travel related items. The suitcase will need to be nearly full in order to pack the suit tight
    • Lay the Suit Down: The suit will need to be laid across the top of the full suitcase. The collar will be 1 inch below the hinge of the suitcase top. The arms of the suit will be folded neatly over the front of the suit
    • Place the Pants: The pants of the suit will now lay on top of the suit jacket. The waist line will be on the right side of the suitcase along the shoulder of the suit with the legs of the pants hanging over the opposite side of the suitcase
    • Fold the Jacket: The jacket bottom will now be folded over the legs of the pants toward the hinge of the suitcase
    • Finish the Pants: Finally, fold the pants legs toward the waist line of the pants and over the suit jacket. The packing is complete

    Tips & Warnings:

Men Stripe Single Breasted Jacket Suit

    • Make sure to write down all measurements as they are taken
    • Take the list along on the shopping trip. It will save a lot of time and effort
    • Always try on a suit before making a final selection and purchase. The actual cut of the suit may impact how the material settles on the frame and require that the measurements be used more as a guide rather than a final determination
    • Wear a button-down shirt and dress shoes when you shop for a suit, or plan to try them all on at the store
    • Once you know your size, consider ordering online then have a tailor do any alterations
    • If you put your hands in the pockets of your pants while wearing a coat with a central vent, you expose your rear. You can decide if that's a good thing--or ask a friend
    • Don't buy a suit without having a knowledgeable salesperson or tailor check the fit. Some fitting problems, such as shoulder pads, cannot be fixed
