Denim shorts are a summertime classic that never go out of style, despite ever-evolving trends in jeans. Whether they are made from a longer pair of jeans or sewn from scratch, denim shorts are a great do-it-yourself (DIY) project anyone can tackle.The Basics of DIY Denim Shorts
- There are two ways to make denim shorts. The easiest way is to cut a pair of jeans with scissors. The other, more labor-intensive way is to sew up a pair from scratch.
- If you opt to use old jeans, look in thrift stores, garage sales and even the clearance rack at the mall. Good candidates include trendy jeans whose pant leg type is out of style, like a pegged or over-wide flare.
- If you prefer to make your shorts from scratch, patterns are available online and in brick and mortar stores. Check to see if the pattern is suitable for denim.
Cutoffs
- Procuring jeans to cut is as easy as checking the closet. Jeans that fit well in the waist and hips but are otherwise too short or are torn in the knees are perfect candidates for being cut off. Try the jeans on, marking where the cut should be. Remove the jeans and put them on a table. Get a measuring tape and measure how far the line is from the crotch of the jeans to get an idea of how much will be cut. Short shorts have an inseam of anywhere from two to six inches. Mark the measuring line all the way around both legs and then, using sharp scissors, cut slowly, following the line. After cutting, trim the threads or let them hang.
Sewing Up a Pair
- If you can't find any jeans to be recycled into denim shorts, consider sewing a pair.
- If you are using a pattern, follow the guidelines on the back of the envelope to find out how much material is needed and what other supplies are necessary, such as a zipper, rivets and snap enclosures. Follow the instructions provided inside the pattern on how to put the shorts together. Consider taking a sewing class if the instructions prove to be difficult to follow.
