Size in Detail:
How to Measure a Men's Ring Size:
- Cut a piece of string to about 2 inches in length. If you don't have string, cut out a strip of paper about 1/4-inch wide and 2 inches long
- Wrap the piece of string or paper around the base of your ring finger. Wrap around both the base of your finger and your knuckle if your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger
- Mark the string or paper at the exact point that it overlaps to make a compete circle around your finger. Do this for where it overlaps on your knuckle as well, if you needed to measure it
- Unroll the string or paper and place it against a ruler that is divided in millimeters. The starting end of the string or paper (the end you first put against your finger) must be at the base of the ruler and marked 0. The point at which the mark on your string or paper meets the ruler is the circumference of your ring finger. If you needed two marks because of your knuckle, make a new mark exactly between the two and use that mark as your measure
- Refer to a ring chart to get your ring size (see Resources). For example, if the circumference measures 62 mm, your ring size is a 10
How To Make Rings for Men:
- Look at historical men's rings. Getting started on your design means finding your inspiration. There is no better place to start looking than at historical or vintage men's rings. It's often true that "what was old is new again." Look at antique men's rings as well as jewelry from estates and royal collections to get a sense of what you can create yourself
- Look at reference materials. When you're trying to design a ring for men, look at things men are attracted to. Look closely at the designs of car engines, fishing rods, golf clubs or even computer chips. If you are making a ring for a specific man, look at what men are passionate about to help you create your design
- Find your style or motif. Look at styles and motifs that work together. You may find that strong geometric elements and repeated patterns work well for a wider man's band
- Draw your design. Begin with a rectangle about 2 inches by 4 inches. This represents a larger version of a man's band. Play around with your design ideas on paper until you have decided on the final design. Think about materials (gold or platinum) and any gemstones you might want to include
- Talk to a jeweler. Take your design to a goldsmith or jeweler who will carve your design into wax. If you like, you can get a wax "blank" and carve it yourself with some tips from your jeweler
- Get it made. Once your design is finalized, have your goldsmith or jeweler cast the ring and apply any stones you have selected
