Bookend Bases:
Organizing your books doesn't have to a chore. Books make great home decor as long as they're neat, and the displays add character to any room. Make do with creative DIY bookend bases for a look that's personal and chic.Covered Bricks:
- Creating DIY bookend bases from covered bricks is as simple as it sounds. Grab two bricks at a local hardware store. Use paper (thick paper from a craft store works best) or fabric to cover the bricks, wrapping the brick like you would when wrapping a gift. For paper, use double-sided tape to secure it. For fabric, use a few needles meant for sewing.
- You will use the bookends with the wrapped sides facing inwards, leaving you with clean surfaces facing the outside. You can further enhance the bookends by drawing or painting something on the outside using a stencil.
Large Candle Holders:
- Large, ornate candle holders can be purchased at thrift stores, antique shops or home decor stores. Large candle holders create a statement and also are sturdy enough to serve as bookends. Choose candle holders that are in tune with the color scheme of the room they'll be in. If you snag a couple at a great price and feel they don't suit the room in terms of color, a quick trip to the hardware store for a suitable spray paint will do the trick.
- Put the candle holders on newspaper and spray them in a well-ventilated area. Allow candle holders to dry for an hour. Place books on shelf and flank each side with a candle holder. Add a large pillar candle for even more wow factor, but do not burn candles in these holders.
License Plates:
- DIY bookends made of license plates create a quirky look for those who love to travel. Take two license plates and bend each about 1/4 way from the end, so the remaining 3/4 will flank the side of a book. The easiest way to bend a license plate is to place it on the end of a table, with 1/4 of the plate hanging off. This is the portion you will apply pressure to in order to bend the plate.
- When you are done, you will have two L-shaped plates that can easily fit under books at either end of the shelf.
How to Use Books As Bookends:
As you organize your bookshelves, you often need bookends to hold the books upright on the shelf. You can use almost any object as a bookend, as long as it is heavy enough to hold up your books. Bookends can be decorative or utilitarian in appearance---or they can simply be more books. Save money and increase the number of books you can fit on your shelves by using books themselves as bookends.- Gather some of your heavier books and stack three or more for each bookend. If possible, choose seldom-used books.
- Position horizontal stacks of books with the spines facing out, largest book on the bottom and smaller books in graduated order. Place the stack snugly against the end of a row of upright books.
- Stagger books both vertically and horizontally on the bookshelf, not only to create effective bookends, but also to create visual interest on your shelves.

03-31-2010- Pros: the bookstops are very sleek and stylish. they are great as center pieces as much as they are lovely for bookshelves.
- Cons: thought they may be pleasing to the eye, they are very heavy so try not to knock them over! Make sure that you keep them away from small children because they could hurt themselves .
- Other Thoughts: i use it sometimes as a center piece on my coffee table and when i want to switch it up i us it as a bookstop.
