What to Use for Washing Baby Clothes
- Baby clothes sometimes require special detergent for sensitive skin.
Parents of a newborn baby worry about what to use to wash their baby's clothing that won't harm the baby's sensitive skin. To prevent breakouts and rashes, wash your baby's clothing and cloth diapers in gentle detergents and use a common household ingredient for set-in stains. Simple steps can be taken to leave your baby's skin as soft and blemish-free as possible while still getting his clothing clean.
Baby Detergent- Several detergent companies offer baby detergents that are gentle on baby clothes and cloth diapers and don't contain any dyes or perfumes that could cause reactions on sensitive skin. It is best to use this type of detergent if your baby has eczema or is sensitive to even the gentlest regular detergents, according to Kids Health.org. However, baby detergents don't always get clothes or cloth diapers as clean as regular detergents do -- especially if there are many stains or odors.
Dye and Perfume Free Detergent
- Many different detergent companies make a version that is dye and perfume free for those with sensitive skin or for those with eczema or other skin conditions. When switching your baby's clothes to a different type of detergent, test it by washing one piece of clothing first, and checking for any reaction on the baby's skin, before washing any other clothing with the same detergent.
Baking Soda
- Use baking soda on set-in or fresh stains instead of using a harsh chemical for stain removal. Combine water and 1/2 cup of baking soda in a large basin. Soak the clothing and cloth diapers in the mixture as a pre-soak. The baking soda will break down the stains and allow the clothing to come clean completely. It will also freshen the clothing and remove any odors left behind by a messy baby.
Considerations
- It is best not to use any fabric softeners on baby clothes or cloth diapers as they can cause sensitive skin to react. The fabric softener can also cause cloth diapers to not absorb urine properly, according to the Berkeley Parents Network. Cloth diapers should be washed separately from even regular baby clothing loads, and should only be washed in baby detergent.
