How to Launch Your Single Line Kite:

• Figure 1: If the wind is lighter, take the kite about 50 feet downwind and stand it on end, or have a friend take it out and hold it for you (see illustration). As the kite catches the wind pull in line hand over hand with long steady pulls. When the kite becomes airborne relax the tension on your line. The kite will glide downwind. Allow the kite all the line it needs to glide unimpeded. As the kite nears the ground, again give a series of long steady pulls on the line to regain altitude

• Figure 2: Make sure wind conditions are proper for your kite. In fairly strong winds, you will be able to launch the kite from your hand. Hold the kite up until it catches the wind, then slowly let out the line through your gloved hand, giving gentle tugs as the kite gains altitude

How to Make a Dragonfly Kite?

Dragonflies have intrigued people for centuries. People all over the world admire the dragonfly's speed, grace, and agility, considering it a representation of power, maturity, and poise. The dragonfly's shape is suited for adapting into a kite, as the body length provides good balance in the air and the wing span catches the air for good height. Because the wings are fairly narrow, a dragonfly kite will prove a challenge to fly--but an experience you may enjoy

• Place the shorter dowel rod over the larger one to form a cross. Make sure the center of the cross is exactly in the middle of the shorter rod and approximately one third of the way down from the top of the longer rod
• Put a dab of glue on each rod where the two meet and then tie them together with the string. Wrap the string around each side of the cross point and tie it together tightly. Make sure that the rods are straight so that you have four 90-degree angles at the cross point
• Set aside until the glue is completely dry
• Lay the newspaper out on a flat surface
• Draw the outline shape of a dragonfly on the newspaper with one of the markers. The body width and the width of the wings should be at least 12 inches. The wider your width, the easier your kite will fly
• Cut out the newspaper pattern along your drawing lines
• Lay the plastic out on a flat surface
• Place the newspaper pattern over the plastic and tape the edges to hold it in place
• Cut the plastic 2 inches outside the pattern. Remove the pattern from the plastic. Be careful not to rip the pattern because you will use it again in a later step
• Wrap one end of the wire around the top of the dowel rod cross. You should wrap three to four times around the top and have enough wire to then twist the end along the length of the remaining wire. Wrap tightly so that the wire won't slip down the rod when the kite is flying
• Lay the newspaper pattern down on a flat surface and place the dowel rod cross on top; use the pattern to guide you as you form the frame with the wire. Tape the rod to the pattern to ensure accuracy
• Bend the wire to the shape of your dragonfly along all four parts of the dowel rod cross. Wrap the wire around each end once or twice to attach the shape of the frame to the dowel rod base
• Cut the excess wire when you reach the top of the cross again
• Remove the kite frame from the newspaper pattern
• Place the whole kite frame over the plastic dragonfly
• Turn up the edges of the plastic around the wire frame and staple it together all around the wire
• Thread the needle with the kite string and pierce through the plastic from the back side of the kite at the top on one side of the dowel rod. Pierce the plastic on the other side of the dowel rod. Tie the string over the dowel rod on the back side of the kite. Tie it very tightly
• Pull the string straight along the length of the center dowel rod so that it is taut, but not too tight. Pierce the plastic and the bottom of the kite as you did in the previous step and tie a knot at the bottom of the kite. Cut the string
• Perform step 18 across the width of the kite at the ends of the shorter dowel rod
• Tie one end of the string around the cross of the two strings at the center of the kite. Tie a tight knot, but do not cut the string after you make the knot. This will form the kite's bridle
• Decorate the dragonfly with colored markers
• Tie one end of the ribbon for the tail to the bottom of the kite around the dowel rod
• Cut the contrasting ribbon into six equal sections and tie each one around the tail ribbon at equal intervals

How to Make a Chinese Kite?



Created from silk and bamboo and lavishly hand painted, traditional Chinese kites exhibit intricate details and skilled craftsmanship. Nowadays, you can find mass produced kites in the traditional Chinese style, but they do not compare to handmade kites. You can choose to make your own Chinese kite using traditional or more basic materials

Instructions:

• Visit China Pan Kite Factory to get an idea of the many shapes seen in Chinese kites (see Resources below). You can also see how the frame holds the silk for each kite
• Select straight dried bamboo sticks to create the frame of your kite. The knots should be as far apart as possible
• Choose pieces of silk to make your kite. Untreated silk will not work. You should buy treated silk that can be pulled taut with little give. If you are on a budget, you can also use plastic trash bags or butcher paper
• Create the frame for your kite and begin cutting the silk. If you are using paper, you may want to decorate the paper before you frame it to avoid tears and wrinkles
• Attach the silk to the frame by looping the fabric over the bamboo and using a zigzag stitch. The fabric should create a sleeve or tunnel around the frame. Make sure you maintain a uniform tension while sewing to ensure the fabric is stretched properly. Paper or plastic can be glued
• Link the Chinese kite sections using kite or bridle string to connect the bridles together. The bridle is a string that is permanently attached to the frame that has a tow point where the flying or connecting string is attached
• Decorate the kite using paint or fabric markers. Chinese kites tend to have elaborate designs or lettering, but you can use your imagination
• Add more flare to your Chinese kit. Produce several dragon or centipede rings at once by coiling a 5 cm. piece of bamboo into a pot of the desired diameter. The ends should overlap about 2 cm. Fill the pot with water just below the bamboo. Cover the pot and boil for about 30 minutes. Let the bamboo cool and cut into thin strips. Glue the overlapping ends
