How to Use Preventive Knee Wraps:

You may think of a knee wrap as something you use after your knee has been injured. However, knee wraps can be used as a preventive technique and help you avoid knee injuries. Knee wraps can be worn anytime you engage in a physical activity, such as playing basketball, hiking or lifting weights, or you can wear them on a regular basis if your knees are giving you persistent problems when you are walking. Wraps lessen the pain you are experiencing in your knee. Wrapping your knees creates pressure and tightness in the knees and allows your knee or knees to maintain a constant setting.

• Sit down and extend your leg, relaxing it. Put the loose end of the wrap behind your knee, beneath the joint, according to the University of Washington. The long side of the wrap should be in alignment with the crease in the back of your knee. That way, when you bring the wrap around, the lower portion of the knee is covered.
• Unroll the wrap around the lower portion of your knee and pull the wrap snugly but not too lightly. It should be snug enough that it holds the loose end of the wrap in place.
• Carefully unroll the wrap around the knee, maintaining an even snugness. Stretch the wrap a bit, but not too so you don't cut off circulation around the knee. If you don't stretch it at all, there will not be any support provided and the wrap will fall off.
• Unroll the wrap until it covers the upper part of your knee. The kneecap should be supported from above and below. If you have an exceptionally long wrap, you can wrap in two layers, although one layer is sufficient. Secure the wrap by either the hook-and-loop connection on the wrap on with a safety pin.
• Stand and try to squat. Your knee should be able to bend without being restricted. If it's too tight or too loose, start over and rewrap your knee.
