    About Knitting Needles

    Knitting Needles Set

    History

    • Nobody knows for sure how long people have been knitting. Early people probably played with handspun fibers using sticks, but the earliest known examples come from pre-Columbian Peru and the Middle East. The Nazca culture (100 BCE to 700 CE) perfected a form of single-needle knitting, called crossed knitting, used on the edges of their fabrics. Examples of this form of knitting have also been found in Egypt and the Euphrates Valley, dating back to the 5th century BCE. Because they were made of wood, no samples of the earliest needles have been found.

    Straight Needles

    • The earliest needles were probably pointed sticks that had been peeled of bark and smoothed or carved. Today there are many kinds of straight needles in many sizes and forms. Traditional needles come in varying lengths (generally 8 to 12 inches) and are pointed on one end with a cap on the other to keep the stitches from sliding off. Until recent history, this was the primary needle used by most knitters. A variation, double-point needles, are shorter (6 to 8 inches) with points on both ends. They come in sets of four or five and are used to knit in the round for items like socks and the crowns of caps.

    Circular Needles

    • Circular needles consist of short pointed needles connected by a filament of plastic or nylon. They were developed early in the 20th century for use in knitting large garments. Circular needles come in lengths from less than 12 inches to 60 inches. The most popular lengths are in the 16- to 29-inch range. The largest circular needle will hold a complete afghan. The smallest come in handy for knitting sleeves and other smaller items. Many knitters have dropped straight needle knitting altogether, because the use of circular needles permits the weight of the work to sit in the knitter's lap, taking strain off the arms and shoulders. Anything that can be knit on straight needles can also be knit on circular needles. Circular needles also come in interchangeable sets with several tips in varying sizes and cables in varying lengths. These sets allow the knitter to customize the needle to the job without having to dash out and get the length and size she needs.

    Needle Sizes

    • Some early fishing nets were knit with needles that were 1 inch in diameter or larger. Back in the 1960s, there was a fad of knitting on these big needles, and many older knitters may have a pair lying around. Knitting needles come in a variety of sizes, or diameters. One tool found in most knitting bags is a gauge tool with holes showing all the various sizes. This comes in handy with double points and circulars, which may not have the needle size printed on them. Some of the newer designer needles are also made without a size marking. The smallest needles are size 0/2 mm and the largest usually sold in stores is size 13/9 mm. Needles are available up to size 19/15.6 mm but usually have to be specially ordered. (Needle size is now listed in both the American and Continental sizes. For example, size 13/9 mm means the needle is U.S. size 13 mm and European size 9 mm. The two are listed together because many needle manufacturers and pattern writers have moved to using the European size as a standard, while American knitters may have a whole collection of older needles with only the U.S. size on the needle.)

    Needle Materials

    • Wood was the earliest material for knitting needles. Because it decomposes over time, we don't have any early needles to inspect. Today needles are made of numerous materials including wood, plastic, metal, glass, resin and bamboo. Many knitters have preferences, although bamboo and wood seem to be universally popular, and every knitter probably has at least one set of needles in bamboo or wood. Metal needles don't break, but they also don't bend. Without give in the needle, the knitter's hands get tired faster. Metal needles are very smooth, allowing fast work, but they make a clicking sound which annoys knitters who like to knit in church, movies or meetings. Wood and bamboo needles have quite a bit of give and also feel warm in the hand. Resin needles are hollow and very light. The are strong and at least one brand makes every size a different color, making it easy to find a matched set. Glass needles warm as you use them and are fairly break-resistant as they are made of Pyrex.

    Novelty Needles

    • With the growing popularity of knitting, a cottage industry of designer needles has risen up. Needles made of exotic woods or handblown glass, or needles with fancy caps or carvings on the ends are popular items at fiber shows and sales. They are more expensive to buy, but many knitters can't resist owning at least one pair.

How to Begin the First Stitch in Knitting?

    • Learn to Cast on. Before beginning the first stitch, tie a knot on the needle using the yarn.
    • Open the loop. Keep the needle that has the stitches on it in your left hand and the empty needle in the right hand. The yarn should face the back of the two needles.
    • Put the right hand needle from front to back into the first stitch on the left hand needle.
    • Move the working yarn under and than over the point on the right hand needle.
    • Make a loop through and than slide the first stitch off the left hand needle, while the new stitch remains on the right hand needle.
    • Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to the end of the roll you are knitting on.
    • Turn the knitting around when beginning to knit the next roll. The worked stitches will be on the left hand needle.

Everyone starting out in knitting should have at least a set of every size needle to properly gauge work and follow patterns. Being an overly tight knitter, I have made extra trips to the store when starting out because I had the wrong size. With this set, and a few other sets, I'll at least have the bases covered. It’s well worth it.

The needles are smooth and easy to use. The size markings could be darker. I'm worried they will fade with use. Excellent beginner set, though. I would give a four stars but I have too many crooked ends to give it a higher mark.

This is my second purchase from this manufacturer - I bought the straight needles and was very satisfied with my purchase. They weren't quite as nice as Clover bamboo needles, but for what I paid for the Stanwood set, I was satisfied.

These are awesome! They are so smooth and so much better than metal or plastic needles. They don't tear the yarn like metal or feel funny like plastic. And, the huge pack is such an incredible deal. They feel really nice to knit with because they are super smooth and warm up in your hands as you knit with them.
