How to Make a Night Gown:

• Measure the circumference of the widest part of the torso. It doesn't matter whether that is on the hips, bust or waist, says Wallgren
• Add 6 inches to your measurement, then divide that total by two. The resulting measurement is the width of the two rectangles you will be cutting to make the nightgown
• Cut one rectangle 45 inches by the width measurement previously calculated. Cut a second rectangle 52 inches by that same measurement
• Along the top of the 45-inch-long swatch of fabric, fold 1/4 inch of the raw edge of the fabric down on the wrong side. Iron along the fold line, then fold that edge over again 1/2 inch. Iron again and secure with straight pins to form the back casing
• Stitch to secure the inside edge of the back casing using a sewing machine. Set your stitch length to about 12 stitches per inch
• Multiply the fabric width that you calculated in Step 2 by .75. This calculation will be the length of the back elastic
• Cut a piece of 1/4-inch-wide elastic to the length calculated in the previous step
• Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread the elastic into the back casing. Secure the other end of the elastic to the fabric with another pin so that it is not lost inside the casing. When you finish pulling the safety pin through the casing, secure that end of the elastic to that side of the casing as well. Stitch both ends of the elastic in place
• Fold the 52-inch-long rectangle of fabric in half lengthwise so that the folded edge is exactly in the middle of what will be the front of the nightgown
• Along the top sides of the folded fabric, mark two points: one on the side 7 inches down from the top and the other on the top, 5 inches from the side. Draw a line between those two points to form a triangle. (The line will measure about 8.5 inches.)
• Cut along the line you just marked through both layers of fabric. Open up the front fold
• Fold down on the wrong side 1/4 inch of the raw edges of the fabric along the lines that you just cut. Press along the fold lines, then fold those edges over again 1/2 inch. Press again and secure with straight pins to form hems of the front armholes
• Stitch to secure the inside edges of the armhole hems
• Repeat Steps 4 and 5, this time working on the 52-inch rectangle that will be the nightgown front, to form the front neck casing
• Stitch together front and back pieces, with right sides together, beginning at the finished edges at the top of the fabric rectangles
• Iron the open seams on both sides
• Turn under the unfinished edge 1/4 inch all along the bottom of garment. Iron and turn under again 1/2 inch. Iron again
• Stitch along the inside edge of the hem
• Pin a safety pin to the end of a ribbon or soft cord. Thread the ribbon or cord through the front neck casing. Pull through and center, with equal lengths of ribbon or cord outside each side of the front neck casing
• Slip the nightgown over the torso of the person for whom it is intended, draw up the ribbon or cord at the neckline, and situate the ends appropriately on the back for comfort. You may desire to crisscross the ribbon in the back. Otherwise, placement near the center back will prevent the straps from slipping. Secure with pins and stitch in place. Trim any excess ribbon

How to Wash Delicate Lace Fabric:

• Attach any buttons or snaps before putting the garment in the wash load. If the item does not specify hand wash only, then it is most likely safe for a gentle wash cycle only lasting 2 or 3 minutes. If it is hand wash only, use a small amount of mild detergent or club soda on the dirty spot and wipe clean
