How to Buy a Table Lamp:

• Choose a lamp of an appropriate size. On a petite nesting table or narrow console, a candlestick lamp may be best. A roomy end table or bombé chest can accommodate a more bulky ginger jar
• Consider the lamp's style. A high-tech swing-arm lamp will look out of place on a carved Victorian table, while a faceted crystal-and-shiny-brass table lamp is likely to be jarring on a Shaker or Mission night stand
• Take measurements to be sure the lamp will be tall enough to cast its light over your shoulder, especially from a chair-side table. The bottom of the shade should be about even with your cheekbone when you're sitting on the chair, and the light's beam should fall on the page if you're reading
• Find out what the lamp's maximum wattage is. A reading lamp should offer 150 or more watts
• Check that the bottom edge of the shade hides the lamp's bulb socket when the lamp is viewed from a few feet away. This will make the lamp more attractive as well as reduce the potential for glare

How to Wire a Table Lamp:

• Untwist the finial from the shade rest and remove the lamp shade. Remove the light bulb. Squeeze the harp sides toward the lamp socket and lift the harp from the saddle. The saddle attaches to the lamp under the socket
• Take the socket apart by pulling the outer shell from the socket cap, exposing the cardboard insulator sleeve and the interior socket. Slip the insulator sleeve from the socket, exposing the socket terminals
• Loosen the two terminal screws, releasing the lamp wires from beneath them. Pull the interior socket from the socket cap and untwist the socket cap from the lamp base. Lay the lamp on its side and peel the felt from the bottom of the base, exposing the lamp wiring. Grasp the lamp cord from the exterior of the lamp base and pull the cord, removing it from the lamp
• Thread a new lamp cord set through the hole in the base of the lamp and up through the lamp body, extending it out from the top of the lamp. Thread the cord through the replacement socket cap and screw the socket cap onto the lamp body
• Slice apart 2 inches of the membrane connecting the two wires of the lamp cord. Tie a knot in the cord below the sliced wires
• Twist the smooth wire from the lamp cord around the silver screw on the replacement interior lamp socket and twist the ribbed wire around the brass screw on the socket then tighten both screws. Cover the interior socket with the cardboard insulator sleeve. Slide the outer socket shell over the sleeve, pushing it into the socket base. Replace the lamp harp, light bulb, lamp shade, felt and finial

How to Hang a Desk Lamp:

• Position your desk lamp on the wall over your desk. Plug the lamp in and turn it on prior to hanging it, and move it around on the wall over your desk until you find the hanging position that will provide the best lighting for your desktop
• Mark the mounting points for the lamp with a pencil. Drive a thin wire nail into one of the points. If the nail enters the wall easily, you can mount your lamp with toggle bolts. If the nail will not penetrate the wall, you should mount your lamp with expansion anchors
• Mount your lamp with toggle bolts by drilling a hole large enough to accommodate a toggle bolt and closed toggle at each mounting point. Insert the toggle bolts into the lamp's mounting plate, and thread the toggles onto the bolts behind the mounting plate so that the tips of the closed toggle point toward the head of the bolt. Insert the bolt and closed toggle into the wall until the toggle opens behind the wall. Tighten the toggle bolt while pulling out on the bolt to keep the toggle tight against the wall interior
• Mount your lamp with expansion anchors by drilling a hole with a masonry bit at each mounting point. The holes should be slightly smaller in diameter than the expansion anchors. Gently tap the anchors into the holes with a hammer, and screw the lamp's mounting plate to the wall, aligning the screws with the expansion anchors
