Laser pointers project a small laser beam that can be used to point out things across a long distance. They are often used as a joke by many people, but they can also be used to help out in projections and slide shows for business or education. Using laser pointers during projections of slides or other material requires proper use of laser pointer safety.

Watch the Brightness

• Laser pointer brightness is important when deciding on the laser pointer you want to buy. People who buy them for non-serious reasons don't need a very bright laser pointer. A laser's brightness and accuracy are rated on a scale from 1 to 100 mW. A 1 mW laser pointer won't be enough for a projection, while the highest-level lasers are only used in serious manufacturing. A 5 mW laser pointer should be good enough to use with projected material. They will cut through the light of the projector but won't create an overwhelming glare.

Use Circular Motions

• One mistake is to point the laser directly at the spot to be highlighted. This can make the spot it more difficult to see. This is especially true if the important information is spread over a larger area.
  Instead of pointing at each individual spot, make circular motions around the perimeter of the pertinent information.
