What are LED Lights?
- LED stands for "light-emitting diode." LED lights are extremely small semiconductor diodes that are capable of creating light. The light that is created by any given LED can be of any color and can even be ultraviolet or infrared. The light that is created by an LED light depends on the material that is used to make the semiconductor and the current that is run though it. There are many different types of LEDs, including miniature ones, as well as high-powered LEDs and multicolor variations.
How Do LED Lights Work?
- LED lights work very similarly to standard light bulbs except for the fact that LEDs are much smaller and contain no filament.
- Instead of a filament, an LED creates light using nothing but the movement of electricity along the path of its semiconductor.
- As the electrons stream across the semiconductor, they create electromagnetic radiation. Some forms of this electromagnetic radiation can take the form of visible light, which humans can perceive via sight.
What Are LED Lights Used for?
- There is an almost inexhaustible supply of applications for LED lights, some of which have already been realized and others that are currently being implemented
- Within the world of electronics LED lights are used in traffic lights, screen displays, computers, brake lights and any other application which requires a bright, inexpensive and long-lasting light.
- They also are used in the burgeoning field of photonic textiles and as a source of light in places where high temperatures cannot be tolerated. Indeed, LED lights are one of the most important technologies in contemporary electronic products and many such products would be impossible without them

05-10-2011- Other Thoughts: These are very bright even in warm white. And reasonably priced. Highly recommend. Swapped out my E27 out front and my wife had no idea. Put one next to an MR16, it is VERY close. And my total measured usage went from 445W to 115W yahoo! Problem I have is these are wonderful but I need more floods instead of spots and they are more expensive?

05-04-2011- Other Thoughts: I really like this light. It is only 3 watts yet it appears brighter than my 55 watt warm white white halogen lamp while producing much less heat. The pictures don't lie this thing is really bright at a great price. I will definitely be buying more and would recommend them to anyone looking to save money.

05-02-2011- Other Thoughts: I purchased several of these to use in landscape lights and they work well. I didn't measure the angle of the spots, but they are narrow enough to light columns on my porch. The color is close to halogen but a little whiter. The LEDs are situated close to the lens on the lights whereas the originals were farther back. This means that they shine in your eyes a bit more when you walk by them, but if this is only a problem if they are located near a sidewalk.

04-25-2011- Other Thoughts: These LED replaced very hot 35 Watt halogen bulbs.
They are as bright as the halogen bulbs replaced.
The price might be a little hight but these LED bulbs will pay for themselves since I am saving energy from the low wattage LED bulbs and I don't have to run the AC unit as often to cool the room.

04-20-2011- Other Thoughts: I got this to replace a 50W halogen. I'd say it is a bit dimmer than it - probably equivalent to a 35W halogen, but still quite bright and nice color. You couldn't tell it's LED.

04-19-2011- Other Thoughts: this light amazed me!!! i hooked it up to my bike (put a small 12v battery on there as well) it is VERY bright and people i showed it to thought it was incandescent because it is amazingly not white(for led) i really reccomend it, it does shine in a beam (not so much a flood light) but thats great for my use, and uses allmost no power :)

04-11-2011- Other Thoughts: I replaced a five bulb fixture E27 lamps with these bulbs after trying out one, then replacing the other four.

Are they as bright and brilliant light the halogen MR16? No, but they are reasonably close.

Is it economical to replace the halogens with led bulbs that cost 3x as much? Probably not - the five led bulbs probably cost more than the original fixture with bulbs and I doubt there will ever be $60+ in electricity savings from this fixture in my lifetime.

However, they do not heat up (the fixture or the room) like the halogens and may never burn out. And I feel better about leaving them run, unlike the halogens they replaced.
