How Does a Stylus Pen Work:
The Ballpoint Pen SideOne defining characteristic of a stylus pen is that it has a working ink pen. Many stylus pens use ballpoint technology. To make the pen work, ink is loaded into a pressurized tube capped on one end and sealed by a small metal roller ball on the other. The roller ball acts as a cap of its own, sealing off the end of the ink tube to keep the ink fresh and retained in the cylinder. When the user writes with the pen side of the stylus, the roller ball is pressed against a writing surface such a paper or fabric. As the ball moves along the writing surface, it rotates to leave a trail of ink. When the pen is not in use, it can be capped to prevent unintentional marks.
Dual Purposes
When the cap is removed and placed over the stylus end (exposing the roller ball for writing), the cap provides additional weight to the end of the pen for proper balance and an improved writing experience. When the ink portion of the stylus is not in use, the cap is placed over the roller ball to prevent unintentional marks. In addition, the cap guards against damage to the roller ball which, in some situations, can render the ink portion of the stylus pen useless.
The Stylus End
Opposite the roller ball mechanism is the actual stylus device. In most cases, the stylus is little more than a protruding rubber or plastic nub, though some stylus instruments designed to work with multi-touch devices (like the Apple iPhone or the Samsung Instinct) may have a capacitive material that creates a surface similar to human skin. The protruding stylus is used as a substitute for a finger when tapping touch-screen devices, and is specially designed to not scratch or leave marks on electronic screens. Depending on the design, the stylus may be covered by the cap when not in use, or it may protrude at all times. What Is the Definition of a Stylus Pen?

- The word "stylus" comes from the Latin word "stilus," meaning "stake." The plural form is "styli." Other names for stylus pens include "PDA stylus pen," "stylus," and "PDA stylus." Apple introduced the first PDA with a stylus pen in 1993.
- Function
- A stylus pen is an input device to write text, draw lines, or select from a menu on an electronic tablet or screen. A stylus pen takes the place of other input devices such as the keyboard and mouse.
- Identification
- Stylus pens resemble writing pens, having points designed not to scratch PDA screens.
- Computer-Aided Graphics Applications
- Computer-aided graphics applications originally used stylus pens to write on electronic pads, with both devices connected to the computer. Software reproduced the graphics on the screen.
- Hand-held Computers (PDAs)
- Hand-held PDAs (personal digital assistants) such as the Apple Newton MessagePad and the Palm Pilot used stylus pens. Users wrote simple text and pictures and selected menu commands with the pen.
- Fact
- ATM/credit card PIN pads at retail stores use stylus pens.
How to Attach a Touch Screen Stylus to a Phone:

- Many modern PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant) phones come equipped with a stylus. This is a plastic pen-like instrument that is used in conjunction with the unit's touch-screen LCD display. What you may not know is that you can attach the stylus to the PDA in a built-in holster. This holster is located on the outside of the unit.
- Instructions
- Hold the "Power" button on your PDA down until the unit powers completely off.
- Locate the stylus compartment on your PDA. This will be located on either the left or right side of the PDA. You should see the entrance hole at the top of the PDA.
- Slide the stylus down into the compartment until it can't go any further. At this point the stylus is secure in the compartment.

05-18-2011- Other Thoughts: Let the pen do the tapping not your finger on your IPhone. It's a great invention especially for those of us who have BIG hands. As easy as carrying a pen only lighter weight. The folks in the Apple store asked me where THEY could get one

05-07-2011- Other Thoughts: In spite of Apple's insistence that fingers are the only way to go with the iPad, I MUCH prefer using this stylus. Instead of having to clean the screen once and sometimes twice a day, now its just maybe once a week or less. Also by using the stylus instead of my fat fingers I can select closely-spaced touch-points for example on busy web-pages (or on the hideous iPhone virtual keyboard). The only question will be with long-term durability of the tip

04-06-2011- Other Thoughts: A must have accessory. I use with my iPod touch... greatly increases precision for playing games, drawing, typing, whatever. The iPod touch goes in my shirt pocket and the Pogo Sketch hangs on a lanyard around my neck... glad I got the one with the clip

05-01-2011- Other Thoughts: Truth is, touching your iPad or iPhone all day with your fingers is painful after a while. This stylus works well, and I use it a lot. It is expensive. I'd say for the price I paid for one, I should have gotten three. Don't know how long it will hold up -- it's made up of light materials -- but, still, I recommend it
