How to Connect License Plate Lights:

• Vehicles on public roads in the United States, and in most other countries, are required to illuminate the rear license plate. These lights must be illuminated whenever the head or tail lights are turned on. Vehicles are powered by direct current (DC) systems, usually 12 volts. Lights in a DC system require connections to a positive and negative terminal
• Most vehicles are negative ground systems, meaning that the vehicle chassis is connected to the negative terminal of the battery. Therefore, lighting often requires only one wire. Mounting the light fixture to the chassis constitutes the second (negative) connection
• Procure a license plate light fixture and bulb
• Determine an appropriate mounting location for the light fixture. Light fixtures must be mounted on a metal part of the vehicle, unless the fixture contains a separate ground wire. Consult the manufacturer's instructions
• Expose a small section of bare metal underneath the location where the fixture will be located. Drill a mounting hole if needed. The bare metal is needed to form an electrical connection between the fixture and the vehicle chassis. This is the ground terminal for the light.
• Mount the light per the manufacturer's instructions
• Identify a wire leading to a tail light circuit. Make sure this is not a brake light or turn-signal circuit. If you are mounting the light on a trailer, the brown wire is usually the tail light circuit
• Connect the wire from the fixture to the tail light circuit. If you use a dual splice connector, this can be done without cutting or stripping either wire. A sample of this connector is provided in the Resources section.
• Secure the wires and test the light

How to Install LED Lights on a Car:

LED lights are a popular aftermarket option for most vehicles as they are brighter-than-normal halogen bulbs and last a lot longer while using less power. The problem with installing LED lights on your vehicle is that you cannot simply swap out the bulbs. You actually need to replace the entire light assembly. The two most common lights that are converted to LED are the headlights and taillights. In order to do so, you must remove the old headlight/taillight assembly and install the new LED assemblies.

• Turn the vehicle's engine off and open the hood
• Disconnect the electrical connection harness from the rear of the headlight assembly. Some vehicles require you to remove a rubber seal or cover to access the connector
• Remove the fasteners securing the assembly to the engine compartment. Most vehicles have screws that can be removed with a Phillips screwdriver, but others have bolts that need to be removed with a socket wrench. Pull the assembly out of the engine compartment
• Install the LED headlight assembly and reinstall the fasteners. Reattach the connector harness and the rubber seal/cover if necessary
• Repeat with the other headlight assembly and close the hood
• Turn the vehicle's engine off and open the trunk
• Remove the two screws or bolts securing the taillight cover to the trunk and remove the cover
• Disconnect the taillight's electrical connector harness and remove it from the vehicle
• Install the replacement LED assembly and reconnect the harness. Reinstall the cover and screws
• Repeat with the other taillight assembly and close the hood

How to Connect LED Lights to a Car:

You can connect LED lights to a car for added nighttime safety, or just to dress up the appearance of your vehicle. Almost all aftermarket LED lights sold in auto stores today have a simple, single-wire installation. You will need some basic know-how about splicing electrical wires to install LED lights on a car, but it's a fairly simple process. As an example, we'll walk you through how to connect an LED light bar, and you can then apply these steps to any kind of single-wire LED light

• Disconnect the negative cable from your car's battery
• Open the trunk of your car and look for the wiring harness that leads to the rear lights. You may have to use a flathead or Phillips screwdriver to remove any covering panels to access the lights. Older model cars will have wires passing directly and simply through the body of the car
• Identify the "earth" wire feeding into the rear lights. The "earth" wire is the wire that feeds power to the lights from the fuse box. You can identify this wire from wiring diagrams for your car, by tracing the wire from the fuse box to the light, or by the process of elimination--trace the ground wire from the lights to the frame (usually near the light assembly), and the earth wire will be the other one coming off the lights
• Pass the wires through a pre-existing hole
• Cut the earth wire in two. Make sure you do this at least 4 inches away from the lighting assembly or any point in which the wire passes through the frame of the car or joins a major part of the wiring harness. This will make the wire easier to work with
• Strip a half-inch of the plastic wire coating off both ends of the earth wire. Strip one end of your 16-gauge wire. Twist all three ends of bare wire together tightly and then wrap the connection in electrical tape
• Locate where you want to mount your LED light bar on your car. Make sure there is a point at which you can pass the single wire from the LED assembly through the body of the car and into the trunk (whether you are installing on the interior or exterior). You will add length to the wire if necessary, but try to maintain the shortest distance between the earth wire of the LED bar and the earth wire of your lighting assembly
• Follow the instructions that came with your LED lights to attach them to your car. Some models screw down, and some also may require the use of an adhesive or additional clips
• Pass the earth wire of your LED lights through the body of your car to the trunk. If your location is too far away to allow the wire included with the LED light to reach, feed the wire you attached to the earth wire of the lights up through the body and then splice it to the LED wire. If your LED wire reaches, splice it to the 16-gauge wire in the trunk
• Tape the earth wire up and out of the way of trunk hinges or payloads. Using a couple wraps of electrical tape around the wire to hold it to the original wiring harness is always a good idea
