    About Lunch Boxes

Lunch boxes have come a long way since children began using containers to carry their lunches to school in the 1800s. Whether you are shopping for a lunch box for your child or seeking a classic box to add to or begin your collection, you can learn something new about them here.

    • History
    • During the last quarter of the 19th century, lunch boxes came into use by working men who could not afford to purchase a hot lunch or did not have time to rush home and eat. These boxes were industrial in make and appearance, similar to a small toolbox. Children began emulating the practice, creating lunch boxes using colorful cookie tins or metal tobacco containers. In the early 1900s, children's lunch boxes appeared on the retail market, sporting illustrations of children playing.
    • Function
    • Lunch boxes, also known as lunch kits, were created and marketed as a way for children to carry homemade lunches to school. The boxes were seen as a way to keep lunches fresher as well as keeping sandwiches and treats from being crushed, unlike paper lunch sacks. Lunch kits, which included vacuum bottles, commonly known by the brand name Thermos, allowed mothers to send cold beverages or hot soups with their children, making them a hit with both parents and kids.
    • Types
    • There are now several different types of lunch boxes available. In the 1950s, Aladdin and Thermos began selling rectangular metal lunchboxes decorated with popular television characters. Dome-shaped metal boxes emerged in the latter part of the '50s, mimicking workmen's lunch pails but bearing popular, child-friendly artwork. The 1960s saw the emergence of trendy vinyl lunchboxes. Currently, lunch boxes are typically made from soft, insulated foam materials such as neoprene. Hard plastic boxes are also available.
    • Features
    • Vintage metal lunchboxes featuring pop culture icons such as cartoons, westerns and movies are collectibles. Lunch boxes with rust, scratches, holes or dents are worth much less than those in better condition. Any original straps or handles should be present and in good repair, as well as small parts such as hinges. Buyers seeking to collect classic lunch boxes should check for copyright dates on those that appear like new. Many "retro" lunchboxes have been made, and a novice buyer could be fooled into purchasing a cheap reproduction.
    • Expert Insight
    • Collecting lunch boxes goes beyond finding and purchasing them. Once someone has begun his collection, caring for the lunch boxes is an imperative part of protecting that investment. Water damages metal lunch boxes, and direct sunlight can fade and discolor vinyl, plastic or metal versions. Allowing dust and grime to build up on them can also be harmful. Lunch boxes of any type should be periodically washed with mild dish soap and warm water and then dried completely.

How to Choose a Lunch Box?

    • Consider what you'll use the lunch box to carry. Use a tough metal or plastic lunch box to protect foods that can bruise, break or smush. If you plan to pack your foods in plastic containers, a soft lunch bag is fine.
    • Choose a lunch box or lunch bag that is large enough to accommodate all your items without having them move around when jostled.
    • Consider how you'll be handling your lunch box. If you'll have to fit it in your backpack or book bag, a hard exterior will keep your food from being squashed.
    • Purchase a soft-bodied, insulated lunch bag if you'll be carrying items that need to be kept cool or hot. Few hard-shell lunch boxes offer insulation.
    • Purchase an insulated beverage container (either with the lunch box or separately) just in case you decide to bring along a little soup, coffee or another beverage.
    • Think about the image you'd like to project to your coworkers and companions, and choose your lunch box accordingly. Most plastic and metal lunch boxes will carry images of some sort, including superheroes, cartoon characters and even political figures.

00:00:00 09-06-2011 great Lunch Ideas Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: A great way to bring a healthy lunch to work. When I make a macrobiotic lunch it works great (soup, beans, etc). Keeps the hot food warm and the cool food cool. Also, the portion size is just right for healthy eating.

00:00:00 08-29-2011 Pretty darn good Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: I bought the Microwave Lunch Box after reading through these reviews. I decided that if the bowls got stained I didn't care. I also decided that I would not put liquid in a bowl that wasn't designed for liquid. Knowing these things in advance allowed me to like this lunch box a lot better than I might have otherwise so thanks to all the reviewers here. I did have a pleasant surprise... I'm a big guy and like big portions. When I saw the size of the bowls I though I had wasted my $$. But I was surprised when I first took lunch in it. I couldn't finish it all! There was never too much of any one thing but there were 4 things and I was stuffed.

00:00:00 08-15-2011 Fantastic Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: Packing lunch for my husband has never been easier. It's great to know that every day he's having a nutritious, healthy and interesting lunch. No more ham sandwiches ....... just once in a while, now and then :)

00:00:00 08-02-2011 Bag Useful for other things Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: The bag that accompanies the Microwave Lunch Box is very useful: cinches at the top to stay closed, easy to throw over your shoulder to keep your hands free. On several occasions I have left the lunch jar at home and used the bag to take my thermos and 3 yogurt containers stacked. It may not be the reason to buy this product but it's a nice plus.

00:00:00 07-26-2011 Envious lunch-goers eye this Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: This Microwave Lunch Box has turned out to be a convenient way to bring a pretty decent dinner to work without using lots of large containers that ultimately take up room in a gross staff refrigerator! I keep this on the shelf at work and for the most part the hot (or cold) components do stay the correct temperature. My main complaints are minor--if something is warm on the bottom, it will radiate heat to the top containers. Also, the largest of the 4 containers is not able to hold sauces or liquids because it is not designed to be "watertight" so to speak. Regardless, I use it everyday and people in the break room usually eye it.

00:00:00 07-19-2011 Great besides absorbing smells Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: I've had the Girls Lunch Boxes for about six months and use it to bring lunch with me every day. It works great and definitely encourages eating a healthy lunch. The main problem I have with it is that the plastic tends to soak up smells and stain easily. For example, my soup container has a faint orange color and smells due to eating tomato soup in it a few times. Besides that it's great though and highly recommended.

00:00:00 07-05-2011 Soup bowl is small Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: I found this Food Lunch Box very useful and worked exactly as described. My only complaint is the soup bowl is small. In fact, it is the smallest of the containers. You can not put an entire can of soup if you want to eat just soup for lunch. The "rice" container is the largest and if you are trying to watch your carbs the food pyramid is set up backwards. You cannot put soup or liquids in any of the other containers as it will leak. The soup bowl has a screw on top whereas the other containers have plastic lids that either twist on or snap on. I wish the product review would have stated the soup container is the smallest as that was my primary purpose in buying the product.

00:00:00 06-22-2011 Good for holding a lot of food Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: I commute 40 miles a day by bike, and with all that riding I'm supposed to consume 4,000+ calories just to break even. The Mr. Bento is the first container I've used that allows me to carry that much food without making a mess or taking up too much room in my pannier. Its insulation keeps hot food hot and cold food cold, but of course it can't do both at once, so it's best to carry everything cold and pop the should-be-hot food in the microwave upon arrival. The containers clean easily and do not absorb food smells or flavors. All around, it's a great product.
