How Does a Magnifying Glass Work?

- The earliest magnifying glass recorded was created by the master scientist Alhazen, in 1021. He published a comprehensive work, The Book of Optics which laid out many principles of optics, and many interesting devices. One of these was described as, "a magnifying device, a convex lens forming a magnified image," the first known magnifying glass. This basic invention went on to inspire many other inventions, including the microscope, which helped revolutionize the fields of biology and chemistry
- The magnification of a magnifying glass is determined by the optical power of the glass, and the distance it is held from the object being viewed and from the eye. A typical magnifying glass would be labeled to be around a 2X magnifier, implying that the size of objects viewed is doubled, although this is likely to be better than most average users would achieve. On the other hand, someone with relatively poor eyesight could use such a magnifying glass to achieve an even higher relative magnification
- Although some people think that a magnifying glass is cutting off the area being viewed, in reality the area covered by the glass is the area shown. Unlike a straight viewing, however, some areas viewed are much larger than they would be with the naked eye, while others are much smaller. Each point viewed under the magnifying glass has its own ideal focal distance, which is why when using a magnifying glass most people will move the glass closer and further from the object being viewed, to find the ideal distance
- The best way to think about how a magnifying glass works is to imagine it in a two-dimensional situation first. If you imagine something underneath the glass, like a ladybug, you can then imagine two lines coming up from either side of the ladybug into the air. If it were a normal piece of glass, those lines would just travel straight and never meet, and you would see both points of the ladybug relative to where they actually are. With a magnifying glass, however, the light is bent such that the two invisible lines eventually meet in the air. An ideal distance has that point right at your eye
How to Use a Magnifier:
- Experiment with several magnifying glasses to determine the strength that best suits your needs. Office supply stores are a good source for finding various types of glasses
- Hold the magnifying glass several inches above the text to be read. Move the glass up and down above the page until the best clarity is achieved
- Carry a small magnifying glass with you anytime you may need to sign a legal contract. Even if you wear glasses, this can help with reading the fine print in a loan agreement or automobile purchase or lease
- Look at lighted magnifying glasses for doing craftwork. The light will illuminate and the glass will magnify small parts
- Purchase full sheet magnifying film if you are having difficulty reading the small print in a book. These come in sizes to match anything from a mass market paperback to a full sized hardback or trade paperback book
Tips & Warnings:
- Magnifying glasses are made of either plastic or glass. Plastic clouds over easier than glass, while glass can be scratched easier
- Simple reading glasses are nothing more than magnifying glasses set into frames for easier reading
- If you still have trouble reading using a magnifying glass, see your eye doctor or optometrist to have your eyes checked for any major problems

01-01-2011- Other Thoughts: My wife and I got this lamp for her mother who is a diabetic with poor vision. The lamp makes it much easier for her to see the amount of insulin she is placing into her syringes before giving herself insulin injections.

01-12-2011- Other Thoughts: I purchased this for my 92 year old mom; she began using it immediately. Primarily it helps with fine newsprint, but will also enable her to return to her embroidery. Pretty good for those small puzzle pieces, too.

11-05-2010- Other Thoughts: My wife purchased this lamp for cross stitching at night while we are watching tv. It replaces an older rattle prone cross stitch lamp. The LED is bright and allows her to direct the light to exactly where she needs it so that the light doesn't blind me while watching tv or even talking to her. The magnification is great and she likes that portion.

01-23-2011- Other Thoughts: When I first received this magnifier lamp, I was shocked as to how big it was! This thing is absolutely huge in comparison to magnifiers I've seen at local stores. The magnification is a bit crude with heavy fringing effects at the edges of the lens - only really the dead center of the lens is clear. But for the price, this was to be expected unless you really want to spend several hundred dollars more on a really nice one.
