How to Use a Jewelry Loupe:

Understanding how to properly use a jewelry loupe is important for a variety of reasons. The most obvious reason is that without proper technique you may miss important information while examining a piece. The less obvious reason is that a professional jewelry dealer may be watching how you use a jewelry loupe to assess your level of expertise. The last thing you want is to come off as a rank amateur. By learning a few simple techniques and taking time to practice, you can learn to use a jewelry loupe like a pro- Know how to choose a good jewelry loupe before you buy one. Loupes are available in varying levels of magnification, but a 10x magnification is the level required by the Federal Trade Commission for professional grading. Look for a loupe that has a black body around the lens. Loupes are available with silver metal bodies, but these can cause light reflection that distorts the view. Images Jewelers suggests investing in a triplet loupe, which has three lenses instead of one, for the best visibility
- Keep the loupe steady when examining jewelry. Rest both of your elbows on a counter or table top. Hold the loupe between your index finger and thumb about 1 inch from your eye. Rest your forefinger against your temple to keep the loupe-holding hand still. Hold the jewelry you want to examine between the thumb and forefinger of your other hand, approximately 1 inch from the lens. Rest your pinky finger against the hand holding the loupe to further steady your view. Rotate the jewelry, not the loupe, as you examine the piece
- Understand what you're looking for with your loupe. For example, if you are shopping for antique jewelry, you will be looking for hallmarks and other jeweler's marks that can help you determine authenticity. For modern jewelry, you may be looking for the telltale chips that distinguish a zircon from a diamond. Go to your local library and conduct research on the type of jewelry you plan to examine. Avoid nasty surprises as a jewelry buyer or seller by educating yourself on how to use your loupe to determine value
How Does a Magnifying Lens Work:

Convex Lens- A magnifying glass is a convex lens. A convex lens is a type of spherical lens. That means that the magnifying glass consists of two sides of glass and that it is thicker in the middle than the outer edges. The thickness is because the glass bows outward in the middle. The shape of the glass distorts the way we see the image on the other side
What You're Looking At
- When you look through a magnifying glass at an object, you are focusing on one central point of interest. The object under the center of the magnifying glass appears larger. Objects toward the outside edge of the magnifying glass appear normal size or smaller
Focal Length
- If you put the magnifying glass too far from an object it will appear smaller. The magnifying glass must be placed closer to the object than the distance of the focal length of the glass
Magnification
- The amount of magnification of an object refers to how many times larger it appears than it actually is. This is usually expressed by saying 2x magnification. The 2x is the power of magnification. When using a magnifying glass, you control some of that power by how far away your eye is from the magnifying glass
Light
- The way a magnifying glass works is by bending light. As light passes through a convex lens, it is bent by the glass. Our eyes perceive the bent light as a bigger object, even though the object itself has not changed in size at all

10-29-2011- Other Thoughts: It took me a while to find this magnifier. This item was a steal for the price that I paid. It comes in a nice case. The eye loupe itself has good weight and the quality is excellent! This is definitely a professional grade eye loupe and I do recommend it.

11-09-2011- Other Thoughts: I purchased this Illuminated Magnifier after reading the other reviews and noticing how cheap it was. It is truly a spectacular deal! It took a few minutes to realize just how close your eye had to be to it in order to see but after that I have been looking at everything.

11-26-2011- Other Thoughts: This Portable Magnifier is pretty much a tiny microscope. I can actually use it on my computer screen to see the individual colors that are making up the graphics, not bad! I would highly recommend purchasing one of these at this price just to have for some random fun!
