How Magnifiers Work:
Light Rays:- Humans perceive objects because light rays hit the objects and bounce off. Magnifiers take those light rays and bend them inwards to focus on a point in space somewhere above the magnifier. Think of this tightly focused beam of light as a tightly-packed stream of information
Curvature:
- The curve of the glass in the magnifier is bowed out, or "convex," which in turn bends light. The more curved the magnifier, the stronger its magnification because it is bending more light in a shorter space
Your Eye:
- By moving the magnifier toward and away from the object, you are refining where the point of magnification strikes your eye. When the point strikes your eye, the lenses inside your eye (such as the cornea) "unpack" all this extra detail and project it onto your retina, thus the object seems larger than it does to the naked eye
Tips & Warnings:
- Magnifying glasses are made of either plastic or glass. Plastic clouds over easier than glass, while glass can be scratched easier
- Simple reading glasses are nothing more than magnifying glasses set into frames for easier reading
- If you still have trouble reading using a magnifying glass, see your eye doctor or optometrist to have your eyes checked for any major problems
