How to Open a Mailbox Lock?

    Security Mailbox

    • Open a mailbox lock.

If you receive your mail through a post office box, a private mailbox provider or an apartment building, you have to unlock it to retrieve your mail. These locks come in different forms and utilize either a combination or a key. You can open a mailbox lock as long as you have the combination or the key.

    Instructions

    • Enter the post office, mailbox facility or apartment mailbox area where you rent a locked mailbox. Find your mailbox, identifiable by the number given to you when you paid for your mailbox rental.
    • Place your mailbox key into the lock, if your mailbox utilizes a key to unlock it. Insert the key with the teeth facing downward until you can't push it in any further. Turn the key clockwise until you hear the lock click, then pull open your mailbox lock.
    • Set your combination dial at 0 to start opening a combination mailbox lock. Turn the knob so the 0 on the combination knob is even with the notch next to the dial. Turn the knob clockwise, pass the first number in your combination twice and line that number up with the notch on the third time around. Turn the knob counterclockwise, pass the second number in your combination once and line that number up with the notch on the second time around. Rotate the knob clockwise to the third number in your combination. This time, land on the number immediately without passing it. Turn the lever on your mailbox downward and pull open your mailbox.

How to Make Your Own Mailbox?

    Plastic Mailbox

Are you the victim of mailbox vandalism? Or is your mailbox just starting to look a little ratty and old? If this sounds like you, you may want to make your own mailbox. It is a lot cheaper than buying a new one. Doing this will not only allow you to make your mailbox more secure than standard mailboxes, but will also allow you to be creative with the color, design and shape of your mailbox.

    Instructions

    • Screw the mailbox to the top of the post horizontally.
    • Attach one end of the two wooden side supports to the mailbox base you just attached, and the other end to the post. Do this on both sides of the base and post. The supports should be at a 45-degree angle.
    • Choose the location of your mailbox. Standard post office guidelines say that the mailbox should be 8 inches away from the road, so take that into consideration.
    • Dig a hole with a shovel or a hole digger where you want to put the mailbox. It should be about 2 feet deep and only as wide as necessary.
    • Place the post in the hole. Fill the hole with gravel 6 inches deep, and level the post. Pour a layer of concrete around the post, and level again.
    • Fill the rest of the hole with soil. Attach the mailbox to the mailbox base.

    Tips & Warnings

    Steel Mailbox

    • Check with your local post office for mailbox guidelines. Many times there are specific instructions for the type of road you live on or depending on the amount of traffic on your particular road. Also, if you built your own mail holder, be sure it meets the codes and requirements your local post office has in place. Not following them could lead to you not getting your mail.

00:00:00 01-20-2011 Solid Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: When I first got it I questioned whether mail could be easily inserted or not. The mail carrier does not have a problem with it, so its ok. Only the very smallest packages can be put in it, however.
