How to Craft Unpainted Russian Stacking Dolls:
- Make all the dolls from a single piece of wood, or they will not properly nest
- Place the wood on a wood turning lathe and use a round woodcarving chisel to smooth the wood
- Make the smallest doll first, which is solid and does not come apart. Keeping the wood piece on the turning lathe, shape the doll using a triangle woodcarving chisel. Once formed, use the chisel to separate the doll from the wood piece
- Make the second smallest doll next. This doll will separate and so the halves must be made one at a time. Form the lower half first, using the triangle chisel. Using the hooked chisel, hollow the inside of the lower half, and indent a ridge around the opening that will fit the lip on the upper half. Separate the lower half from the wood piece using the triangle chisel
- Make the upper half, using the same techniques. Form an outer ring on the opening of the upper half so that both halves will fit together. Once both halves are formed, smooth the pieces with sandpaper, fit them together and leave them to dry
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 in making the rest of the dolls, ensuring that each is slightly bigger than the last so that they will all fit and nest together
- Prime the outer surfaces of the wooden pieces with a starchy glue, once they have dried, to prepare a surface ideal for painting the dolls
How to Make Russian Stacking Dolls:
- Determine how many dolls you want to create to nest one inside the other. Make the smallest doll first since it will dictate the size of the larger dolls. Take a piece of whichever wood you decide to use, for example balsa, and turn it on your lathe. Stick with the same wood for each set of dolls you make

- Start turning the bottom half of the next doll. The smallest doll must nest inside of this next doll. When turning the bottom half of the next doll, make an indented ring at the top. Turn the top half of the doll and make an inset on the bottom. When you attach the top and bottom halves the inset fits into the indented ring and secures the doll in place. Repeat this process for the remaining dolls
- Use your chisel and woodcarving knives to shape the turned dolls. The dolls are usually a pear shape with bodies that are wider than the heads
- Apply wood oil to all the dolls and set them aside for at least one week. Treating the dolls with wood oil helps preserve them
- Apply glue primer to the dolls and set them aside until they are thoroughly dry. Applying the glue primer to the dolls helps the paint adhere to their surfaces better
- Paint each doll, giving them facial features and a traditional Russian folk costume. Look at pictures of other dolls for ideas. Use oil paints or tempura. Set the dolls aside and let the paint dry thoroughly
- Apply finishing lacquer to the dolls to help protect the paint

11-04-2010- Other Thoughts: I love the fact that these dolls are plastic. The wooden ones my children played with before gave them splinters and I am wary of the paint on those old wooden ones. These are really great and my kids love them! They want MORE! I would recommend these nesting dolls to ANYONE!

11-25-2010- Other Thoughts: These are so cute! I got them for my 5 year old along with a story book about a nesting doll. She has played with them daily for a couple weeks now. The price is right and the painted on faces are just as cute in person as they are in the photo. I recommend these for certain.
