How to Learn to Use a Measuring TapeThere are two main types of measuring tapes. A retractable, metal measuring tape is used for measuring straight lengths, such as boards, windows, or rooms. A soft cloth or paper measuring tape is used for measuring items that are not straight, such as a person's waist or the circumference of a beach ball. Both types of measuring tapes are marked with lines to show inches. While some measuring tapes show both inches and centimeters, here we will discuss only those that measure in inches

- Look at the marks on the measuring tape. There are five different sizes of lines in each inch. The longest lines show whole inches. The next smaller lines show half inches. The lines shorter than those show fourth inches. The next smaller lines show eighth inches, and the tiniest lines show sixteenths of an inch
- Start at the first long line. This is the beginning of the first inch. Count the tiniest marks from the first long line to the next long line. You should have counted to sixteen. That means that these tiny lines divided the inch into sixteen equal parts, and each part is called "one sixteenth of an inch."
- Now count every other line (the ones that are a little longer than the sixteenth lines). You should have counted to eight. That means that these lines divided the inch into eight equal parts, and each part is called "one eighth of an inch."
- Next count every fourth line (the lines that are a bit longer than the eighth lines). You should have counted to four. That means that these lines divided the inch into four equal parts, and each part is called "one fourth of an inch."
- Look at the line right in the center between the two longest lines. (This is the second FOURTH line you just counted.) This is the halfway mark, and shows one half an inch
- Hold the measuring tape beside your book. Make sure the first longest line is even with the bottom of your book
- Look at the measuring tape at the top of your book. The last number before your stop point tells you the number of inches. If the book is a bit longer than the last whole inch mark, you will have to count the smaller marks to see how much more the book measures. It might be eight and a half inches tall, for instance

How Does a Tape Measure Retract
- Tape measures are a useful device for any sort of craft, whether it be tailoring or woodworking The first U.S. patent for this commonplace tool was filed in the middle of the 19th century. Now, it would be difficult to imagine a tool box that does not include a retractable tape measure
- People who work with tools prefer the retractable tape measure, which brings the measuring tape back into its casing when the measuring process is finished. These handy devices can be sources of wonder in addition to being useful tools. They operate through using spring technology
How the Tape Measure Retracts
- A spring on the inside of the casing supplies all the power that these devices need. When the tape is pulled, the spring inside the casing is extended. Pulling out the end of the tape measure further causes the spring inside the casing to extend. When the user releases the end of the tape measure, it retracts into the unit, and the spring returns to its original position
- Most retractable tape measures used in woodworking or construction projects have a switch on the front side. A few retractable tape measures used in tailoring have a similar button on the side of the unit. The button causes the spring to lock into position. This locking feature allows the craftsmen time to properly measure the materials that he is working on. When the switch is released or the button is pressed again, the spring inside the casing contracts, and the tape measure is pulled back inside
- Although it seems a little strange that tape measures should come in right and left-handed versions, there are left-handed versions available for southpaw craftsmen, hobbyists and construction workers

07-19-2011- Other Thoughts: Cannot beat the price, seems it will last just as long as the more expensive options. Hard plastic tape, good pull back and lock.

06-14-2011- Other Thoughts: I work for a very large commercial general contractor. Very high quality tool and a must have for any DIYer or contractor. Everyone on the job site has one of these. If you are using it constantly every day, yes, your tape will break. But, for most people, it will last a very very long time.

06-27-2011- Other Thoughts: Really love this Retractable Measuring Tape. The Stanley FatMax is really easy to read and works great for those long measurements because of the width of the tape. It feels great in your hand due to it's small size and the rubber coating make it very easy to grip. Probably the best tape measure on the market right now. Buy one now, you will love it!

07-04-2011- Other Thoughts: Never really thought about getting an expensive tape measure with an 11 foot stand out, but tried it. It does seem firmer and extending the tape, but you have to arch the tape up to prevent the tip from dipping down and this skews the accuracy of the measurement. The tab to press down to hold the tape does not seem to hold and on numerous times it has released prematurely.
