How to Treat Exotic Boots:
- Use a soft-bristled brush to rub off debris, dirt or dust from the boots. Brush in one direction. Exotic leather includes alligator, ostrich, shark and kangaroo
- Use a sponge or damp cloth to buff the leather with an exotic leather conditioner. Exotic conditioner is specially designed to get under the angles of exotic leathers, like the scales of snakeskin. Apply one thin layer over the leather, and let it soak in for about a minute. Keep applying thin layers until you have about five layers of conditioner
- Dip a cloth into a cream-based leather polish and carefully buff the exotic leather with the polish, all over the boot. If the boots are black, brown or tan, use a polish in that color. If they are lighter-hued, use a neutral (colorless) cream-based leather polish. Let it soak in for about five minutes
- Use a sponge or soft cloth to rub a non-silicone water and stain protector onto the exotic leather. Firmly rub it into the leather and let dry overnight
The Best Way to Protect Boots:
- There are many protectants on the market for leather. These are designed to protect against water, keep the leather's oils locked in and keep the leather from hardening. Before choosing a product to protect your boots, be aware of the specific type of leather your boots are made of. Chemicals that work well on a stronger leather could damage suede, for example. Also, determine what level of protection your boots need. If you expect them to get wet often and wear them outdoors a lot, use maximum protection. If you mostly wear them indoors at social gatherings, a lighter protection will suffice
- Beeswax compounds are effective as a water-protectant and will not damage the material on traditional leather. Nubuck and suede need products specifically designed for them. Acrylic copolymer sprays work best for them
- Always spot-check any product before applying it to the entire boot. Pick a small spot that is not visible and rub some compound in to see if it affects the coloring or texture of the material. Apply waxes and oils with either a soft cloth or a shoe brush. Always pay particular attention to seams and welts as those are the places water can build up and damage the boot
- Use mink oils to condition leather boots and apply polish afterward to give them a shine. Don't do this with suede, however
- All boot treatments wear off eventually. Reapply them as necessary. If you're not sure if the treatment is still effective, spray your boot with a small amount of water and see if it is repelled or sinks into the leather
