Different Styles of Men's Underwear
- There is a complete line of undergarments for men in the fashion world. When mentioning men's underwear, people automatically think about boxers and briefs. While boxers and briefs are certainly part of the line, men's underwear also includes undershirts, T-shirts, athletic support and, surprisingly, certain types of swimwear.
- Undershirts
- Undershirts are designed to be worn under dress shirts and business clothing to help absorb perspiration and hide body hair. They are made to fit close to the body so that they do not compete with outer clothing. Undershirts are usually made of a thin material so that they are not too hot and do not present too much bulk, making them unnoticeable. Undershirts come in crew neck and v-neck styles as well as tank top and sleeveless (muscle shirt) styles.
- Bottoms
- Men's underwear bottoms are made from a variety of materials, such as net, polyester, satin and silk, with the most common being cotton. Many men wear boxers or briefs; however, there are several styles that fall under each category. Boxers include the traditional boxer, the full-cut boxer, the boxer brief and the tapered boxer. Boxers look like shorts with inseams of 3 inches and flies that are either open or have button closures.
- Briefs come in more variety and shapes, including the thong, the trunk, the traditional standard brief, the string bikini, the mid-rise brief, the low-rise brief and the bikini. Thongs are similar to the female thong with a little more material for coverage in the front. The standard brief is a form most men are familiar with and consists of a full rise covering the waist to the top of the thigh with an overlap fly. The bikini and string bikini are similar; both are low-rise, covering the front and back. The difference between the two is that the string bikini offers a thin band of material on the hips leaving most of the skin exposed. The mid-rise and low-rise briefs cover completely but offer a waistbands resting below the waist and on the hip. The trunk resembles the swim briefs from the 1950s, offering formfitting and short legs with 1 to 2 inch inseams.
- Athletic Support
- There are three styles of underwear that fall under athletic support: the jock strap, the compression short and the sports brief. The jock strap has wide elastic strap that support a front pouch that holds a protective cup to help avoid sports-related injuries. The compression short is a long-legged version of the boxer brief made of two-way stretch materials. The compression short extends from the waist to the knee, does not have a fly and is formfitting. The intent is to keep a person warm without creating rashes or chafing. The sports brief is an alternative to traditional athletic supporters. A complete back and front cup provide more modesty for players. The sports brief still maintains wide elastic straps on the hip for wider ranges of movement.
