How to Pick the Right Size Coat for a Man:
Determining the right size for a man's coat is necessary in order to ensure comfort as well as to create an attractive appearance. Selecting the proper size coat is sometimes difficult since some coats are manufactured in numbered sizes while others are manufactured in generic small, medium and large sizes. The key to determining the proper coat size depends on the function of the coat, the clothing it will be worn with and the man's body measurements- Place a tape measure around the entire circumference of the man's chest just under the arms. The measurement in inches is the size of coat that the man needs. For example, if his chest measurement is 40 inches then he needs a size 40 coat
- If the coat comes in small, medium, large and extra large sizes, select one that is the same size as the man's normal shirt or sweater size
- Fasten all of the buttons, zippers and other closures on the coat. If they do not fasten, or they are very tight when fastened, a larger coat size is required
- Stand the man in front of a mirror so that you can see the full length of the coat. If possible, use a three-way mirror so that he can easily see the front and back of the coat
- Cross the arms to see if this causes an excessively tight feeling. If the shoulders or arms are too tight, a larger size coat is required
- Evaluate how much extra room is under the coat and the type of clothing that will be worn with the coat. Suit coats and sports jackets should fit snugly since they are worn with thinner shirts. An overcoat or jacket needs additional room to accommodate thicker winter shirts and bulky sweaters
How to Care for Zippers:
The first mechanized closure was created by an engineer and introduced at the 1983 World's Fair in Chicago. Though the closure was a complete failure and did not resemble the modern zipper, it did inspire a Swiss American engineer named Gideon Sundbach to invent the metal closure we use today. It caught on quickly and was named the zipper after the sound the closure made when it was closed and opened. Today, zippers are in almost every item of clothing, luggage and purses. Though they are durable, most zippers require maintenance to help them last longer
- Never force the zipper. If something gets caught in the zipper's track simply back the zipper up and remove the obstacle before attempting to close it again. Forcing a zipper can cause the slider pull to break off
- Use paraffin wax to lubricate the zipper. This will help the zipper close smoothly which will relive pressure from the slider pull, the slider and the zipper teeth
- Use a toothbrush to brush the zipper with vinegar when it is stuck. The acid in the vinegar will help loosen any particles that have caused it to get stuck. This is also a useful trick if the zipper is rusted
- Relieve tension on the zipper by pulling the sides of the cloth closed before zipping it shut. This is especially useful for luggage closures or for clothing that is too tight. Relieve tension by slowly closing the zipper. This will give you the time to ensure that nothing is in the zipper's way and that you are not overstressing the slider
- Purchase a zipper care set at your local sporting goods store. These kits include brushes and cleaners that will remove dirt, grime and salt residue that can make zippers jam. These kits are especially useful for the zippers on sporting equipment or boats
