How to Clean Leather Shoes at Home

Leather is a common shoe material. Despite its durability, leather needs to be cleaned with care so as not to damage the material. Cleaning leather shoes properly will ensure that dirt and grime are removed from the shoes without compromising the integrity of the fabric. You can use household products to clean your shoes at home.- Wipe down the leather shoes with a soft rag or brush to remove loose dirt and debris. Avoid using a stiff-bristled brush, or the leather may become damaged.
- Remove any shoelaces. If your shoelaces are dirty, they can be washed in the washing machine.
- Dampen a soft cloth with warm water. Sprinkle a moderate amount of baking soda on the cloth.
- Use the cloth to get rid of any scuff marks. Rub the scuff marks gently until they disappear. Wipe over the area with a clean, damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth, to remove any residue.
- Dampen a soft cloth with white vinegar. Wipe down the leather shoes, working in a circular motion, for general cleaning.
- Treat stubborn stains with a paste made of lemon juice and cream of tartar. Fill a bowl with equal parts lemon juice and cream of tartar. Stir with a spoon to form a paste.
- Spread the paste on the stained areas. Use your fingers to work the paste into the stain. Allow the paste to sit on the leather for a couple of hours.
- Wipe the paste off of the shoes with a clean cloth. For heavily soiled shoes, a repeat application of the paste may be necessary.
- Apply a leather conditioner to the shoes after cleaning and removing stains. Follow the manufacturer's instructions if using a commercial leather conditioner. For a homemade leather conditioning, rub linseed oil, olive oil or beeswax on the shoes using a soft cloth. Let the oil sit on the leather for an hour before buffing with a dry cloth.
How to Make Leather Shoes Soft
Leather shoes require a certain amount of tender loving care. Often, new leather shoes arrive hard, making for an uncomfortable wearing experience. Even old leather shoes can harden. There is plenty of information out there about how to make leather shoes soft--some would say too much information. To make things simpler for you, here is a simple guide for softening leather shoes.
- Rub new leather shoes all over with saddle soap, both inside and out. Leave no residue. Make sure the cloth you are using is made of cotton. A soft-bristled shoe brush can work wonders too, and will help to work the saddle soap into the leather.
- Soak a cotton ball in 70% isopropyl alcohol solution and then wring it out. Dab the cotton swab wherever your shoes need softening. Then tightly stuff your leather shoes with newspaper and let stand at room temperature for two days.
- Condition your shoes with a leather conditioner and then apply a sealant. This will prevent water from invading the leather through its pores, in turn slowing the hardening process over time. Repeat as often as needed.
- Wipe out your leather shoes inside and out after each use. Sweat and salt can infiltrate your leather, breaking down the leather and stitching, compromising the softness.
- Brush your shoes off with your hand before and after wearing them.

10-25-2011- Other Thoughts: These Leather Dress Shoes are more comfortable than any other dressy shoe I have ever found. They are almost as comfortable as a gym shoe, are low-maintenance, they last and they are affordable. I wear them for my business-casual work environment where they look great. I am on my third pair and I hope they never stop making this model. These are definitely my favorite and most-worn shoe.

11-09-2011- Other Thoughts: Great service. The shoe is as advertised. The local store had a limited selection, and was out of my size. I ordered from web and received a great shoe at a great price. The Dockers line of shoes is more traditional dress shoe, and not the long toe stuff that curls up that you see so often.

10-22-2011- Other Thoughts: As an attorney, I need to dress up a fair bit, and prefer my shoes in black. I am a no-nonsense person who likes clean, functional designs, and feel that these shoes are perfect for me. As long as the manufacturer makes these, I will buy them. It is amazing to me that Leather Dress Shoes of this quality are available for a cheaper price than good sneakers.
