How to Alter a Wedding Dress Yourself:

Lots of occasions may arise in which you might require to alter a bridesmaid dress. Perhaps the dress is a bit too long or short. Oftentimes, bridesmaid dresses are purchased well before the wedding date. During the time between the purchase of the bridesmaid dress and the wedding date, the bridesmaid could have either gained or lost weight, meaning that her bridesmaid dress will no longer fit her. In lieu of purchasing a whole new dress, you can just alter the dress you already have. With just a bit of sewing skill, the process to alter a bridesmaid dress yourself isn't that hard

• Get your bridesmaid to model her dress for you. Use the tape measure to measure how much fabric should be altered, and then use a fabric marker to mark the dress according to the measurements. Pin up any other pieces of fabric that need to be altered to mark those alterations as well
• Help your bridesmaid carefully remove her dress so that she is not poked with any pins you used to mark alterations, and then lay the dress out on an even surface. Use the seam ripper to remove the seams where the alterations are to be made. Seam rippers will let you cut the thread of the seams without damaging the fabric of the dress
• Use your markings to decide where to re-sew the seam. Start by ironing the crease of the seam flat
• Alter the length of fabric needed for the new seam. Refer to your measurements to pin the dress where the new seam will be. Use the tape measure to measure any measurements and to help ensure that the pinned seam is straight and even
• Use a needle and thread or a sewing machine to sew the new seam. Remove the pins, and iron the seam when you are finished sewing it. Complete the seam by stitching along the length of the seam on the inside of the dress. Trim the edges with pinking sheers, which generate a zigzag pattern that reduces fraying and prevents raveling. You may use a serger machine to finish the seam if you wish

How to Clean a Wedding Dress:

• Spot treat stains. Blotting silk clothing with cool water will treat most food stains. For perspiration or deodorant stains, apply diluted vinegar to the area with a soft sponge
• Fill a clean sink or washtub with lukewarm water. Add two or three drops of hair shampoo or mild soap and stir the water to create lather. Immerse the silk dress and let it soak for no more than five minutes
• Rub stained or very dirty spots with soapy water. Use your fingers or a soft sponge to apply very light pressure. Avoid scrubbing the silk, which can permanently damage the fibers
• Drain the warm water and fill the sink with cool water. Add 1/4 cup white vinegar to neutralize alkalinity and remove traces of soap. This softens the silk and restores its shine. For extra softness, add a few drops of hair conditioner. Use this water to rinse the dress
• Replace the used water with fresh water. Rinse the silk dress again in pure, cool water with no fabric softeners or other additives. Turn the dress as you rinse it to ensure water runs over all areas of the garment and no traces of soap remain
• Remove the dress from the water. Spread the dress on a thick terry-cloth towel and roll it up in the towel, pressing as you go, to absorb excess water. Lay the dress flat on another dry towel or a sweater dryer to air dry

Tips:

• If you have hard water, add one teaspoon of borax to the water for the wash and the first rinse water
• Brighten white silk by adding one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide to the wash
• If you want your dress to dry more quickly, use a sweater dryer, a net stretched over a frame. A sweater dryer is ideal for drying silk items because it lets the garment lie flat but receive air from both sides
• Very delicate silk items, such as silk brocade or dresses with beading, require dry cleaning to avoid damage. Don't submerge a dress such as this in water
• Before treating stains or cleaning a silk dress, check for color fastness. Dampen the fabric or apply your preferred stain remover to an inconspicuous part of the dress. If the color runs or changes, dry clean the dress
