How to Use an External Modem:

    56K External Modem

An external modem is used to connect a computer to the Internet. External modems come in three general types: dial up, cable, and DSL modems. (Dial up modems are generally inside a computer, and are becoming more and more rare.) The majority of computers today come with built in Ethernet cards, which allow them to connect to external high speed modems, and some computers no longer come included with a dial-up 56k modem jack.

    • Purchase a DSL or cable modem. These can be purchased from electronics stores or from computer stores. However, many service providers that provide high speed Internet will sell, rent, or give customers a new external modem for use with the Internet service. Contact your local DSL or cable provider to check on specific rates for modem purchases and rentals.
    • Turn off the computer. Connect the external modem's power supply to an available wall outlet. Connect the cable line or DSL phone line to the line in connection on the external modem. The Internet service provider installs the cable or DSL line to be used.
    • Connect the Ethernet cable to the 'Ethernet in' jack on the back of the router if you are using a wireless router to allow multiple computers to connect to the modem. You can skip this step if you are using the modem with one primary computer or if the modem has multiple Ethernet jacks and the computers will be connected via Ethernet cable and not wireless.
    • Connect the Ethernet cable (which comes with the modem) to the Ethernet network card port, located on most desktops in the back of the computer. On laptops it may be found on the side or rear of the laptop. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet jack on the back of the modem.
    • Turn the computer back on and also turn the external modem on. Wait a few seconds for the lights on the front of the modem to turn on, indicating proper functioning.
    • Test the external modem by double clicking on your web browser icon (such as Internet Explorer) on your computer's desktop to launch the Internet. If the modem was provided by the Internet service provider, you already have Internet service and should be able to access the web. Remember, you will need service through an Internet service provider to use the cable or DSL external modem.

    Tips and Warning:

    Chipset External Modem

    • When using a wireless router with an external modem, always power the external modem on first followed by the router to ensure proper functioning. Keep the external modem in a clean space where there is enough room for air to circulate around the device. Verify your computer has a built-in Ethernet network card by going to 'Control Panel' and clicking 'Network Connections'. You can also look at the back of the computer for an Ethernet jack, which is slightly larger than a standard telephone jack port.

  • Other Thoughts: Works well with my XP Pro desktop that is a small form factor machine that would not accommodate another PCI card. Another great feature about this USB External Modem is the short cable lacking on other modems that plug directly into the USB port. The cable gets the modem out of the way from other devices you might want to plug into an adjacent USB port.

00:00:00 10-04-2010 Works great with Windows 7 Overall:
  • Other Thoughts: My laptop does not have a modem installed. I wanted to add a modem because I needed a FAX. My laptop is running Windows 7 Pro. I purchased this modem, plugged it in, Windows configured the modem hardware (loaded the driver) automatically with no problems. I use it with the FAX driver that comes with Windows. It works just fine, no problems at all.
