    What Are Microscopes Used For?

    LED Microscope

    The human eye can see both near and far away using the eyes alone but if what you want to look at is smaller than one-hundredth of an inch, you have to magnify it first. Microsopes are instruments that increase the size of what you are looking at by between 4 and more than 10,000 times. Microscopes permit us to observe and investigate things as small as an atom.

    History

    • Microscopes have improved a lot since they were first invented in 1595 in Holland by Zacharias Janssen. As an optician, he made glasses, so he understood that a convex lens placed over anything makes it look bigger. Before this, no one had ever been able to see details on very small creatures or to explore the microscopic world. Just a few years later, the Englishman, Robert Hooke made a microscope and then he drew what he saw. Before him, no one had ever been able to describe what a cell looks like. In 1665, Hooke published a book, "Micrographia," with his drawings

    Function

    • Janssen and Hooke used optical microscopes. Modern optical microscopes have electrical lamps to illuminate the specimens that are placed on the slides under the lenses for observation. To make the details more visible, scientists often add a dye to their specimen, which is placed on a thin rectangular piece of glace and covered with an even smaller piece of glass. Low powered optical microscopes, which are also called compound microscopes, can magnify an image to four times its size. More powerful optical microscopes can magnify images 10, 40, or even 100 times

    Significance

    • Optical microscopes are initially introduced in elementary school science laboratories to help students learn about insects and plants. More sophisticated optical microscopes with two objectives allow forensic scientists to compare and contrast two slides at once. There are also industrial uses for optical microscopes. People who inspect fibers in textiles and paper carry portable optical microscopes. Some of these microscopes can be attached to a camera that photographs the magnified images to document them

    Features

    • Much more powerful magnifications can be achieved with an electron microscope. Instead of focusing a beam of light on the specimen to be observed, electron microscopes focus a beam of electrons. This results in the ability to magnify an image more than ten thousand times its original size. When the beam of electrons is broad, the microscope is called an electron transition microscope. Another kind of electron microscope scans the image using a beam of electrons. This is called the scanning electron microscope. The first electron microscope was invented in 1931

    Types

    • Another type of microscope, the scanning tunneling microscope, sends an electrical current through a probe which does not touch the specimen to be observed. After a computer measures the current, a print-out of the specimen can be created. Atomic force microscopes work in a similar way, but the probe is allowed to contact the specimen. Each of these microscopes enables scientists to make very accurate observations of plant, animal, bacterial, and viral tissue. An ion microscope is used when a high resolution of the structure of crystals in metal is needed. Now that microscopes, cameras and computers can be combined, there is no limit to the potential for forensic, medical, botanical, industrial and research observations and applications

    How to Use a Light Microscope

    If you or your children like any of the sciences, then likely a microscope is involved. Many types of microscopes exist but a common one is the light microscope. Learn how to use a light microscope with these tips

    • Remove the microscope and parts from the packing container and look for the instructions or a parts list and locate all the parts of the microscope listed
    • Adjust the mirror or light source. To use a light microscope, you need a light source. The first source of light is from a mirror. A mirror collects light from the sun or other artificial light source nearby and directs it to the area that needs light. The other light source comes from a light bulb present in the microscope. Many microscopes include two different sources of light, a mirror and a light bulb on the opposite side of the mirror
    • Prepare a slide, the piece of glass with a specimen you want to view under the light microscope. The slide can be wet or dry. A dry slide is usually permanent and fixed using resin or a gum-like material. A wet slide sometimes uses stained water to help the microscope user view the material better
    • Place the slide on the mount. In science, they call this platform the stage. The stage sometimes has clasps that help keep the slide from slipping and moving side to side during observation
    • Turn the focus knobs on the sides of the microscope. They give you complete control of how clearly you see the specimen on the slide
    • Record observations in a science journal. Add details of what you think you see. Always add the time and date of the observations so you have an accurate description.
    • Clean up any messes you've made while using the microscope. Keep the area neat for the next time you use the light microscope. Put away all supplies including the microscope, any slides you may have used and your science journal

It is difficult to find your subject sometimes because you are so close up but that is expected with a microscope of any kind. This was worth the money by far.
