How to Make a Spice Pillow?
Spice pillows have been used for many years. Early pioneers used spice pillows to ease headaches or relax for a good night's sleep. This spice pillow is filled with natural herbs and flowers to help relax the sleeper's mind and body.
Instructions- Sew the 5-by-5 inch pieces of fabric together on three sides. Make sure to sew them wrong side out so when you turn the fabric right side out, it creates the pillow.
- Fill the mesh bag with the spices. Use 1 part rose petals, 1 part chamomile and 1 part lavender. Squeeze 5 to 7 drops of the essential oils you chose into the bag. Add 2 tsp. orris root. The orris root helps the spices and oils retain their scents.
- Close the bag by tying it up with a ribbon or by sewing the open end shut.
- Turn the pillow from step 1 right side out. Fill it with the pillow stuffing. Leave enough room inside of the pillow for air to circulate around the mesh bag.
- Place the mesh bag inside the pillow form. Put the bag as close to the middle of the pillowcase as possible.
- Sew the Velcro to the inside edges of the pillow. The Velcro allows you to change the spices as needed and to wash the spice pillowcase.
- Tips & Warnings
- This pillow works best as a flat, square shape. It is also possible to slide your spice pillow into a pillowcase or sham.
How to Make a Neck Pillow?
Neck pillows are often U-shaped to provide extra support and comfort for the head. They're great for traveling, or for relaxing at home. You can find foam neck pillow forms in some fabric stores, or you can stuff the neck pillow with fiberfill stuffing for a soft pillow, or you can fill the pillow with rice to help it conform to the shape of your neck. You may want to make the neck pillow from cotton, or you may want to use a soft, slightly stretchy fabric such as fleece, microfiber or a t-shirt knit. You'll need a piece of fabric that's a little over twice as big as you want the finished neck pillow.
Instructions- Fold the fabric in half with the right sides together. Draw a U-shape that's slightly bigger than you want the finished neck pillow to be, or download a free pattern from the website below. If you are using a foam U-shaped pillow, put the foam on top of the fabric and draw a line around it that's about 2 inches bigger than the pillow all the way around.
- Cut out both layers of fabric and pin them together.
- Sew the layers of the neck pillow together, leaving an opening in the outer edge of the bottom of the U-shape. If you are using a foam pillow form, you'll need to leave a large opening, while an opening that's about 3 inches long will suffice for a stuffed pillow.
- Cut small slits in the seam allowance around the curved edges of the pillow, without cutting through the stitching. Clipping the curves will make it easier to turn the pillow right side out, and keep the edges smoother.
- Turn the neck pillow right side out. Insert the foam, or fill the neck pillow with fiberfill stuffing or rice.
- Turn the edges of the pillow opening under, so that the raw edges of the fabric are tucked inside the pillow, and pin them together.
- Hand sew the opening of the neck pillow together using a whip stitch.
Tips & Warnings

- You can heat a neck pillow filled with rice for a short time (about 30 seconds) in the microwave to make the pillow soothingly warm. Be careful not to overheat the neck pillow, or the rice may burn.
- Use caution when working with scissors, pins, sewing machines and sewing needles.

03-23-2011- Other Thoughts: My head sinks into it. It's a nice pillow if you put it on top of a firmer one. Might be good for stomach sleepers.

05-27-2011- Other Thoughts: I was in desperate need of replacing the ones I had due to how long I had them and how flat they ended up. The first night I slept better than I have in a long time. I didn't wake up once to re-adjust or re-fluff the pillow. I just wish I wouldn't have waited so long to get them. I absolutely love these pillows.

05-10-2011- Other Thoughts: This pillow was packed great. I was very pleased until the moment my head hit the pillow that night. It isn't for side sleepers, and I've adjusted myself a bit.
