How Does a Network Patch Cable Work?

• Types of Cables - Network patch cables are responsible for transmitting data between two devices such as computers, modems, hubs and routers. Modern patch cables are referred to as Category 5 cables (CAT5) or Category 5e cables (CAT5e). CAT5e cables transmit data on faster networks, but both types of patch cables are reliable to use with local networks
• Inner Wiring - The basis of a network patch cable is in its inner wiring, which is made up of 8 color-coded wires: orange, orange/white, green, green/white, brown, brown/white, blue and blue/white. These wires are twisted into 4 pairs according to their color schemes. The inner wiring of a network patch cable is usually shielded by a hollow wiring that protects the paired wires from damage
• Network Ports - The two ends of a network patch cable connect to devices through basic Ethernet ports, which are also called RJ45 jacks. Patch cables have RJ45 plugs on each end, which serve as the final level of connection between the wires and the devices.
